We went (no kids though) and used this pay one fare bus ticket they have down there called the Phili Phlash bus. It brings you to all the attractions. That was beyond easy to navigate and always on time. Not sure if that is what you were looking for to see the sights. We never used their general transportation system.
The Phlash bus has tons of kids and families on there though and the bus drivers were really nice.
If you go this route, get the tickets at a visitors center, you save like almost 50% off that way!!
