Re: Pet Store for Puppy?
There are many places you can get a puppy from but, not the pet store. I would do research on a Lab breeder. Also, there are plenty of puppies that need good homes that are in shelters. Check Petfinder.com There are also rescue groups for certain breeds. With the housing crisis alot of dogs have found themselves with no homes. And with the recession plenty of breeders are stuck with alot of puppies. Once the puppies reach a few months they usually do not want them anymore If you get from a breeder make sure you do your research.
here are a few rescue sites http://adopt-a-labrador-retriever.adoptapet.com/ http://www.lilrr.org/ http://www.rescueforlife.org/ http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/NY171.html

ITA. Look for a good, reputable breeder if you're sure you want a young puppy, or a rescue organization for an older dog. And kudos to you for seeking out alternates to the pet store!

I agree..A pet store is certainly not the place to get a dog. There are so many places out there to get a pure bred dog! Definitely do some more research! Kudos to you!

Sadly, LILRR is no longer in operation, I found out this summer. The person who ran it passed away and all the dogs in their care went to a Connecticut rescue. I don't know why the site is still up or why no one has put a notice on it, but it hasn't been touched since 2008.
I can understand wanting a purebreed Lab, we have one now. We are on the lookout for our second dog, but we are rescuing this time and I have found a TON of Labs, purebreed and mix alike.
Check out Labs4Rescue on Petfinder
As you can see from their pics, they have so many to choose from. Every color, every age, every energy level and temperament. These dogs may not be local but they can be transported here for the right owners. They place a premium on getting the right dog with the right family so they do ask you to fill out an application and be available for a home interview with all the members of your family. Rightfully so; they are trying to cut down on people adopting without being prepared or understanding the full implications of a 10-15 year commitment.
I happen to know that this puppy in particular is on Long Island:
Finn
I know someone who has adopted from them and the process took about 2 weeks.
