Pertussis vaccine?

My Dr. keeps telling me that I must get this vaccine after delivery. She wants the Grandparents or anyone close in contact with the baby to get this vaccine. I think she said it's called the DTAP for tetanus and Pertussis.

I am concerened about side effects of this vaccine. Did you all get this vaccine and have your parents and in laws get it as well?

I'm so torn. Thanks.

Re: Pertussis vaccine?

I got it in the hospital and DH got it the first week we were home. My Dad got it, but my in laws have not. They tried, but their family doctor left the practice and they're having a hard time finding another one. No side effects for me. The two big babies (aka the men!) had sore arms for a day or so.

I got it. It's a booster shot - you already got the vaccine when you were a kid, and this is a booster dose. It protects you from tetanus, pertussis, and diphtheria. If you've had an accident that needed stitches within the last 10 years, you would have gotten the shot then (for the tetanus protection).

My arm was a tiny bit sore the next day from where the needle poked it, but there were no other side effects. Pertussis is deadly - I'll take one day of a slightly bruised arm to protect my baby.

I got it the day I left the hospital. I am a teacher and wasn't sure about returning to work so I got it. My dh did not until recently. I had a rash on my back from it. Just itchy for a day or 2

Re: Pertussis vaccine?

Maybe this is something new they are recc? I gave birth in 2007 and 2010 (at NSUH both times) and no one mentioned it either time - either did our ped.

Re: Pertussis vaccine?

DH got it and had no reaction.

I got it the day I was discharged from the hospital. The next day my arm was a little sore but nothing too bad. I also ran a very slight fever for 1 day. It didn't really bother me except it meant I couldn't go to the NICU that day to visit my boys just in case it was more than a reaction.

I got it and no reaction, which was great since I wasn't able to complete the series as a child because I had a reaction to the vaccine.

It is new, due to a recent outbreak of whooping cough I believe in suffolk and nassau counties.

I got it, and gave birth last month. No reaction other than soreness in the arm.

I didn't ask my parents to get it. I mentioned to them that I would prefer that they get it, but I don't think anyone actually has. I tend to be a bit paranoid/over the top with things, so they just brushed me off, I'm sure.

This is not a new recommendation - when I was 1st pregnant in 2007 they had posters and handouts about this with my NSUH Manhasset OB and it was also strongly suggested by the OB's I was with at Columbia.

I got it. Most people I know did get it. There are outbreaks of pertussis around these days unfortunately. It is part of the tetanus - they used to (not sure if it has changed you would need to check the CDC) but they recommend you get the Td (tetanus) once every 10 years. The Tdap only 1 time in adulthood.

Re: Pertussis vaccine?

I didnt get it but back then it wasn't such a big deal.

If I was pushed that hard by a doctor I'd honestly be turned off. They can test your blood for the antibodies.

Even then, no I wouldn't and haven't taken any boosters. I certainly did NOT even think to force family members to do such a thing. If they were sick they were told to stay away, if they were even feeling low then same goes.

Keep hands clean, etc.

This would be my parents too...so if i was pg again, I dont think anyone would actually get it. But they would need to keep in mind, I would be limiting their contact with my child until my child is vaccinated.

Keep hands clean doesn't work in this case. It's airborne and while it's annoying and painful for adults who have whooping cough (and most often don't know it until much later when their cough just won't go away), it is deadly for infants. That's why there's such a push to make sure parents and caregivers or grandparents get it.

Even if we think we'll just keep sick people away from our newborns, they can still get babies sick if they don't even realize they themselves are sick yet. It happens, it's a real risk and babies do die from this.

We asked my MIL to get it since she watches DS 3 times a week and especially since he was a preemie. I am actually not sure if she got it or not because I didn't want to be psycho obsessive mom, but we did ask and she was not offended.

Re: Pertussis vaccine?

I got it as a child, but it ran out. No one was pushing it when I had DS, or not my doctors anyway.

Last winter I had pertussis, and it was 3 long months of horrible coughing--the worst for the first month or so, but that cough lingered forever. My sides hurt from the coughing, I vomited quite a bit because the cough was so violent. I couldn't exercise at all. My doctor didn't diagnose it right away either, unfortunately (must look for a new doctor)! Luckily, DS and DH didn't catch it from me, or my coworkers.

I know people have concerns about vaccines (justifiably so), but I would consider getting the vaccine. You don't want this, esp. around a baby. You could have your blood tested also to see if you have antibodies.

Just editing to add--I never felt sick, not really when I had this. Maybe the first week, after that it was just the cough. You could not avoid passing it along to other household members who are not vaccinated. The cough is that frequent, and you can't hold it back.
