Personal ? but need advice

Would you get an amnio based ONLY on your age if all oter tests and bloodwork were normal??

I will be 35 2 monts before baby is due

No. Very invasive, and if every other test came out fine I think it would be unnecessary. 35 is not "old" to be worried about age with the baby

I just turned 38 and we are not having an amnio. Although it is a low risk, I am fearful of miscarriage especially after all that we have been through. I know some people like to have the amnio to prepare them if God forbid. Good Luck with whatever you decide.

Re: Personal ? but need advice

I don't know if I would do it even if there is a chance. We are planning to keep the baby regardless, unless there was some major life threatening condition where they probably would not survive child birth (which happened to my DH close friend recently).

The thought of what could go wrong with this kind of test disturbs me. I am going to be 33 when our child is born.

Re: Personal ? but need advice

Personally, I wouldn't--I know it's peace of mind for some, but my OB told me that some of her patients choose to terminate if something comes back on the amnio. Not only would I not want to know anything ahead of time, terminating the pregnancy is NOT an option to me.

No. I wouldn't get one unless other tests came back abnormal, or I was in my 40's.

Re: Personal ? but need advice

I had my DS at 38 and I didn't get an amnio. All my tests came back excellentid and I didn't think twice about getting one . With my daughter, I turned 40 when I delivered and even though my tests came back with great results, I decided to get the amnio bc I was 40 bc It wasn't as bad as I thought and I was glad I went through with it.

Re: Personal ? but need advice

No I would not. I have heard many stories where the amnio did more harm than good. You need to ask yourself if something is wrong what would you do? Is the risk worth the addtional stress and worry?

Re: Personal ? but need advice

Well- I guess I'm in the minority. I did have an amnio solely because of my age. The risk of miscarriage at the Genetics center I went to put the risk of miscarriage at 1/800 which was better than the risk of DS at age 35 (1/200).

I am glad I did it because now I am 100% certain. I spent so much time worrying during my first pg, so I knew I wanted it for #2.

Re: Personal ? but need advice

I had an amnio after all previous tests showed me at a DECREASED risk for anything they may have tested for. I was 37 when I had the amnio and I'll be 38 when I deliver. DH knew the risks but were not concerned about the procedure. We had our reasons for having the test and knew exactly what we would have done with results either way. It is not as black and white as most may think. We will have an amnio with baby #2. FM me if you have any questions. I would be happy to share my experience with you.

I am 33 and about to have my first any day now. Doc wanted me to consider getting an amnio even if my tests came back o.k. but I said "no". He claimed that my age had nothing to do with it and it but I doubt that.

I would like to THANK Leslie (again) as she was very forthcoming and readily answered any questions I had when I was deciding to have an amnio.

My pleasure.

I would also like to add that if it is at all a consideration for you, that I would form your ultimate decision based upon what you, your DH and your doctor have to say about it - nobody else.
