PCOS and weight loss
Have any ladies with PCOS start ovulating on their own just by losing weight? How likely is it? Or is it pretty much a given that I have to go on metformin?
I have a f/u next week and am trying to decide if I want to start meds or not. I started dieting and excercising in Feb, and went down a size, and for the first time in months and had a 35 day cycle in March (what I used to have before I started having issues). I THINK I ovulated b/c I had ovulation pain and then got AF 15 days later, but that doesn't mean I definitely did ovulate. I'm worried I might be wasting valuable time.

Re: PCOS and weight loss
I worked my a$$ off trying to lose weight. I watched everything I ate and did cardio weight training in addition to walking my dogs. The weight barely came off. Don't get me wrong I lost some weight but nothing like I should have been. I went on Metformin and everything changed. I had to stop working out because I was losing too much weight. I started o'ing my third month on it. I got pregnant my 6th month. I had been off bcp for 20 cycles but didn't get pregnant until I went on Met. You need to do what's right for you. I was apprehensive about using meds but it came down to I needed it. Good luck

Re: PCOS and weight loss
I had a different experience. I lost 30 lbs while on Metformin and BC. Once I came off my birth control pills though the weight started going back on slowly. I am up 12 lbs now (total weight loss is still 18 bs) but now I started to exercise and really going back to my eating habits that made me loose weight. HOPEFULLY ill see some weight loss. As far as Ovulating on my own- that did not happen. It is cycle day 70- and still nothitng. I never had a normal AF though ever since I was diagnosed with PCOS at 13. Good luck though everyone is diffierent!!!!

Re: PCOS and weight loss
Thanks ladies!! I still am not sure what I'll do. The strange thing is that I've never really had a problem with my cycles until the end of 2008. I am hoping it was stress-related b/c I have been under a HUGE amounts of stress and until my October cycyle, had pretty much 34-35 days cycles monthly. We'll see!

I went on the Met in August 2008 and was PG by Dec 2008 after 4 years of trying (we did IVF and our previous cycle - without the Met - failed). Once I went on the Met, my egg quality improved tremendously and voila - due in August!
