PCO's and HPT's
So I decided to do some research on whether or not PCO's can effect the accuracy on HPT's. For the most part I have read that it DOES NOT effect the results however I did read some cases where it did effect the results. So I was wondering if anyone had any input on this?? TIA

Re: PCO's and HPT's
I have PCOS and haven't heard of it impacted HPTs.. although I do know it can impact OPKs. For me, for example, I have elevated LH (the hormone an OPK detects) so for me using an OPK is pointless.
Wish I had known that before I wasted soooo much $$$$ on them prior to seeing the RE!!

It's funny you mention this. DH wanted to buy OPK's for me and I kept saying no for some reason then I read the Infertility cure book and they said it will give false positives to people with PCO's.
I understand if its getting into too much info but what kind of plan does your RE have you on? How long have you been TTC?

I totally agree... I have PCOS and I've never heard it affecting HPTs, but it definitely affects OPKs.

Oh please, when is anything ever really TMI on here?! Us ladies share it all.......
I have been off my pill since November, so I haven't been trying as long as most people prior to seeing an RE. I decided to see one after 2 months off the pill because 10 years ago when I went on the pill I was told I probably had PCOS. Before I went off, I knew there would probably be a problem. After 2 months, I had no sign of AF and my regular gyn refused to take me seriously or look at my charts (he was a different gyno than the one I saw 10 years ago) .......
I knew I had problems so in January I decided to go right to an RE rather than waste time. I wasn't at all surprised when the RE confirmed that I absolutely have PCOS. Since then, I started fertility treatments and this is currently my second medicated IUI cycle.
For this cycle I took a round of Femara and gonal-f injections and was THRILLED to find out yesterday that I responded really well to it and produced 2 or 3 good ones!! I go back tomorrow for more monitoring and hopefully will have a back to back IUI Thursday and Friday.

You rock! Thanks for sharing your story. I am basically in the same boat as you. Diagnosed with PCO's 10 years ago and have been on the pill since then. Stopped taking the pill in January and here I am CD 54...no sign of AF, no BFP and I don't think I ovulated. I was hoping I can try metformin first before any other fertility methods since I was on metformin for insulin resistance in the past and didn't mind it. Now I need to decided how much longer I should wait and if I should contact my OB or find a new RE.

Re: PCO's and HPT's
hey there. penny and i have a similar story - except i wasnt DX with PCO until 6 months after i started TTC - which was nov. '09.
i was on BCP until may of '09 - went off to TTC. never got AF. CD70 something got provera. next cycle i did O on my own but not until CD32. haven't O'ed on my own since. I see Dr. B and have done two injectable cycles with him - one where I hyperstimmed, and one where I O'ed and had a chemical pregnancy. i also did one clomid cycle where I did not O. i am taking a break from monitored meds cycles right now but I just started metformin about 4 weeks ago.. so far i have seen very mild improvement, but still no O this cycle, and it's CD30.
HPT's have always worked fine for me - always BFN except for the one BFP i got when I had the chemical.
OPKs however dont work for me. Due to PCOS I have high LH so I get a lot of false + OPK's. I am trying the CBEFM but so far I only get high's and no peaks - but sine i havent Oed this cycle maybe it does work...
Anyway if you have PCOS the first thing you should do is temp (since OPKs can be an issue with PCOS) and see if you are Oing. If you are not i would say - unless you have an AWESOME ob/gyn - go DIRECTLY to an RE who will treat the PCOS specifically and get you to ovulate.
Good luck!!

Thank you for your story. Your are all my PCO sisters and I wish you guys nothing but the best. Maybe I will start temping. Thats not a bad idea. I think I will also look for a good RE in my area. Wasn't overly thrilled with my OBGYN. My first time seeing her was in October and she didn't even care much about my PCO's. to us all

Re: PCO's and HPT's
Temping is a *GREAT* idea! That's what I did at first and it's how I knew I absolutely was NOT pregnant! I feel like had I not been temping and also not getting AF, I probably would have always thought I was possibly pregnant!
Speaking of not being thrilled with your ob/gyn- when I went to mine with my charts he wouldn't take me seriously at all and still wanted to give me a pregnancy test! Even though I had temps consistently in the 96 range! (ovulation followed by pregnancy would show a consistent temp spike)
Anyway- totally agree with that advice! Get yourself a digital basal body thermometer. They have them at all the drugstores- I got mine from Target!
Good luck!!!

I think it varies slightly for everyone..... for me, back 10 years ago I had VERY irregular periods. I wouldn't get it for a long time and then I would get it VERY BAD and it would last 5 weeks.. then go away and come back again 2 weeks later very heavily again!! It was so bad that multiple times I was ended up getting anemic from all the blood loss That was between 8th and 10th grade. I finally went on the pill and was PROBLEM FREE for 10 years!!!!!!!!!
I always had a glimmer of hope that when I came off the pill I would be fine.. though I wasn't surprised when I finally did come off and just never got AF. I went on CD60 and still had no sign of it. When I brought it up to my ob/gyn at my annual appt he blew me off completely and said that all teenage girls have period issues and most grow out of it- and he also said I shouldn't worry about it at all until I was off the pill at least 3 months. I told him about my past issues and that I had been charting but he didn't want to see any of it. He said none of it mattered now.
Well, the RE was like a different world! Took me seriously, got to the root of the problem, and hopefully I'll be in the 2ww again by the end of the week!
Anyway that's my situation- I know it varies for everyone as far as symptoms ... but it's also SO common!! Good luck!!

Re: PCO's and HPT's
With PCOS temping will not usually be a good indicator of anything. Your line will be erratic, you won't see a clear shift in temps because you are not ovulating, and also because you probably have high levels of LH. I found temping to be more frustrating than anything else. If you want to know if you are pregnant or not, the only way to be sure is by taking an HPT. Temping will not be an indicator of that.

I didnt get af at all after going off bcp. My ob/gyn told me to temp to see if i was oing or not. That cycle i did o but havent oed on my own without meds since then (august ). When i showed the ob my chart she gave me clomid and no instructions so i went to an re who confirmed pco. I was ttc six months at that point.

Re: PCO's and HPT's
I dont think that is a relationship between PCOS and the results of an HPT.
I think with PCO/PCOS, everyone's degree is different. I was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries (PCO) not the syndrome by the RE after trying for almost a year. I had NO clue that i had a problem. I alwasy got my period very regularly. I was on BCP for about four years, then got off it and got my period regularly again. My cycles were on teh longer side (31-33 days) but I had no symptoms other than difficulty losing weight. The RE did a sono of my ovaries and determined i have classic polycystic ovaries which is probably a result of insulin resistance. As a result he thought that I was ovulating but probably not regularly. He suggested I cut down on carbs, which I did and lost weight very quickly.

I'm sorry temping just frustrated you and I TOTALLY understand - but that doesn't mean just because she has PCOS it's not worth trying. I know lots of girls, including myself, with PCOS who chart and find it immensely helpful.
Although yes - my chart is super rocky when I'm not on meds, if I didn't temp after BCP I would have had no way of knowing that I wasn't Oing. Yes it was frustrating and painful to find that out - but many people with PCOS do experience a clear temp shift following O.
I'm not going to lie - the first temping cycle that I didn't O was bad - programs like fertility friend would detect O based on the various info that I inputted - only to determine I didn't O a few days later when my temp dropped again. But once you live through it a few times and get used to how your temps move in conjunction with your CM - I find it immensely helpful.
What I find the most frustrating is OPK's which (for obvious reasons) are literally a complete waste of money for girls with high LH. It was the combination of temping and OPK's that convinced me to see an RE. I would get 3 days of +OPK's, then no temp shift, so I knew I didn't O. Then a week later I would get another 3 days of +'s with no O. Then a week after that I got like 7 days of +'s. That's when I went to the RE and found out my LH was 21 !!
