PCOS
I have been experiencing irregular cycles for the past few months and after speaking with my OB/GYN he suggested I see a RS tO get to the root of the issue. Given what was going on DH and I decided to wait until the spring to TTC again (we have a 16 month old DS). Today my RS doctor told me that my insulin levels in my eggs are too high and that I have PCOS. I am naturally now freaked out that I will have tremendous difficulty conceiving this time. They are thinking to try me on metaformin to regulate the insulin levels. If anyone on here has PCOS. Can you share your experience when you were TTC?? Thanks

PCOS
I went and spoke to my OB about it after I never got my period after DD was born. I have a history of very long, irregular cycles as well, and a history of cysts on my ovaries. He took blood and said it was inconclusive, but based on my history he was diagnosing me with PCOS. He also suggested my going on metformin when we were ready to start TTC, saying that for those with PCOS it's supposed to work extremely effectively with no other interventions and quickly.
My plan was to go to him this past spring and discuss starting it so we could start TTC when DD was around 18 m old.
I got pregnant in January, though, right after her first birthday. It would've been my second period after DD was born (so 2nd time I ovulated in 12 months).
I was always told that if I'm getting my period, I'm ovulating and can get pregnant. Certainly hard to plan, but still a possibility. It obviously happened for me (which means birth control will be a priority after this one is born).
I don't know your entire situation, but the fact that you've gotten your period sounds very good. Hard to plan and keep trying, but if you can track CM at all, you have a good chance of finding some fertile days, even if they're kinda all over the place. So you can still get pregnant without intervention, but metformin should help (especially if your insulin levels are high, which is a sign that you're not regularly ovulating, from what I understand) if you want to be able to try harder and sooner.

Thank you so much for all of that info! We definitely don't want to conceive now as my son is only 16 months old, but I want to get things moving in the right direction so we're ready when the time comes.

PCOS
i was diagnosed with a very mild case of PCOS. when i was younger, my cycles used to be all over the place but after i went off of birth control last august, my cycles were pretty regular, with the exception of one month. i still needed to use Clomid and go to a RE to help me get pregnant. Not all women who have PCOS will need metformin.

That's good to know. They also said mine is a "mild" case of PCOS, but I'm glad to know it isn't impossible to have another baby

Re: PCOS
I was diagnosed with PCOS at 17. I would only get a couple of periods a year. SOmetimes not. I was told it would be very very hard to "plan" on when to get pregnant since I never knew when/if AF was coming. I was able to get PG on my own (not planned at all) in Jan '09. I was shocked and thought "well that was easy"...I m/c in feb (NOT b/c of anything to do with PCOS) although I immediately blamed it on that. Never had a period again and 4 months later went straight to an RE for help. After being there for 2m we conceived my DD. 6m later I discovered I was pregnant again, on my own. And had a healthy baby girl.
So i was able to get Pg on my twice! So its possible, just takes a lot of patience cause its so confusing (and frustrating IMO)

PCOS on it's own... with no other issues... is SO common, and one of the easiest things to "treat" as far as conceiving goes.

I can just imagine how frustrating it can be ttc with an irregular cycle. I am so glad I trusted my instincts back in April when my OB told me he felt the irregularity was due to just a cyst. At least now I know it isn't just that and I can do something about it. The only thing I'm nervous over is the blood test they want to do to test the "age of my eggs". The RE told me that if my eggs are older then my actual age then I am going to need to ttc now.

Re: PCOS
I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 21 -- irregular cycles, drastic weight gain, acne, etc. I was on metformin for a good year and then after that on birth control until a few months ago. I tried to get my period back on cycle without any medicine but it didn't work at all, and now I'm back on metformin with the hopes of getting my cycles back in order. I went to an RE also and did a full workup just to assure everything else was good to go, which is something I would recommend just to check, it doesn't hurt at all. I'm now back on Metformin and cycles are starting to feel a bit more regular after just a month or two of being on them. Hopefully it continues like this and we can have a little munchkin soon.
Best of luck to you! Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

That's good to know. MY RE has been doing weekly bloodworkups and sonos to monitor my levels. I'm seeing him again on Thursday so I'll see what he has to say about the metaforim since I didn't ovulate this month. :/
Wishing you the best of luck in TTC

PCOS
i was dx with it after i went off BCP and didnt get AF. as a teenager i got AF normally and then was on BCP for 12 years. my cycle post BCP was either nonexistant or averaged 40-50 days. i started seeing an RE after my OB gave me clomid but no monitoring. it took 18m and IVF to get pregnant with #1 with two miscarriages during that time.
however, since i stopped nursing and got my period back my cycles have TOTALLY regulated!! the first two were also around 40 days long, but then i started back on metformin and now my cycle is anywhere from 27-34 days which is absolutely phenomenal to me !! i still have PCOS but i am ONLY on metformin and no other meds, and my cycle is pretty predictable. although i have 8 frosties from my fresh IVF cycle, i am hopeful that i wont actually have to use them and that #2 will happen naturally. a girl can dream cant she!!
