part time nanny rate
Hoping to get some opinions...
We've got an amazing candidate who will be coming over to our house (10-15 minutes from her home) 3 days a week, but for long hours (11 hours a day). She will be watching 2 kids, but one will be in preschool half day (a bus will take & bring him).
She's got great experience & references.
What would be your salary? What do you do about sick days & vacation days (for nanny and for yourself)?

$8-$10 off the books an hour depending on expierenece and degrees
Sick - whatever works best for your company policy. i like to mimic what i get ..I get 6 sick days a year.
Vacation 2 weeks paid again i would mimic what you get

I would say 12-15/hour, but I use more of a weekly salary unless there are lots of extra hours one week. Since there are days she sometimes leaves early because we get home, etc.
Vacation as previous poster said mimic how you get treated. If you get paid vacatoin offer her the same.

As a nanny myself, (one that was underpaid for a long time), I would say the minimum would be $10 an hour.... It is a long day... If I was sick, I didn't get paid for the day. If one of the parents was sick, I got paid. I didn't get vacation pay (they were teachers.) I was off all summer and holidays.. Sit down and ask her what she thinks and then work around that... Good luck.. It is hard!!!

This is GREAT!
So... I could offer her salary weekly (based on $12-15) an hour. I'd probably pay her on the high side.
I'd pay her for MY vacation time (weekly salary)... I get 4 weeks. Obviously, she won't be working.
All holidays will be off.
I'd pay her if my husband got out early & she goes home (he sometimes does)... weekly salary again.
Don't pay her if she calls out sick.
What do you do if nanny wants a certain vacation time that you don't have/can't take and you need coverage? (Let's say it's another 2 weeks) Do you still pay her for that, or does she cover that?
Thanks everyone... it's my first time & I like this candidate... so I'd like to be fair, yet attractive offer.

$125-150 per day... $8-10 is wayyy too little IMO.

Since you have 4 weeks I would let her pick maybe one of the weeks that you want to take. I wouldn't offer her 4 weeks vacation up front just in case you want to use some of your vacation days for things you want to do without the children :) Maybe say she has 2 weeks and she picks one and you pick the other. Also it can't be in a time period that you can't get off from work. THen work from there.

we paid our nanny 12 an hour for one child (3 days a week, 11 hour day). She was paid for all major holidays (labor day, memorial day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, July 4th) and she had 2 weeks vacation, one of her choosing and one of ours. If I took off of work for a jewish holiday or any other reason I still paid her.

We pay our sitter $20 per hour. She occasionally works Sundays. She arrives at noon and gets paid til 5 pm... Even if I get home at 430. In addition, she gets $500 twice a year- that's her paid vacation money. Some weeks we need her only 2 days.. Some weeks we need her 4 days. We pay $$ for her flexibility - and most importantly... Piece of mind. We've had her for almost 2 years . To us, it's totally worth spending the money on a quality sitter.
