Paper towel use & going green

My use of them is out of control.

I feel like I am single handedly destroying our environment with every tear off the roll.

Any tips on how to improve? I buy select-a-size but I'm not sure it helps that much.

Re: Paper towel use & going green

I use microfiber towels. Much easier to throw them all in the wash and reuse, than it is to go through rolls and rolls of paper towels. we also don't use paper towels to clean windows, we use newspaper.

What about regular dish towels? I try and use these more often.

DH is out of control with the paper towels. I try to buy unbleached ones so that we can at least compost his mounds Chat Icon

I like to use reusable clothes - they sell them in the same aisle as sponges and p/towels.

I don't buy paper towels (or napkins) any more. I only buy reusable cloths.

You can throw sponges in the microwave for 1.5 minutes to kill germs.

Re: Paper towel use & going green

I bought a package of cheap white wash clothes and I use those around the house instead of paper towels. Then I just throw them in the wash with some bleach.

I still use paper towels sometimes, but not nearly as much as I did.

Re: Paper towel use & going green

I have definately reduced my use of paper towels. I now use cloths to dust instead of the paper towels and I use old rags or sponges to clean the bathroom (except for the toilet I use paper towels). I also will microwave my sponges or throw them in the laundry. It's cheaper and better for the environment.

Same here! I need to get some "hand towels" for the kitchen. I go through too much and I want to change that.

I use dishtowels and sponges (I nuke them every few days to kill germs) more frequently. I think a roll of paper towels lasts at least 3 weeks now if not longer.

My next step is paper napkins. I have some jumbo pack from costco, when they are done I am going to start using cloth napkins. I only have one meal a day at home so it won't really add to the laundry.

I stopped using paper plates a while back.

Re: Paper towel use & going green

Question for everyone.

How much greener are you really if you are cleaning up messes with reuseable cloths and having to wash them constantly (either in a washing machine, dishwasher, or just running water under the sink).

That's a lot of wasted water (plus electric to run an appliance to clean). I guess you have to weigh water waste vs. paper waste.

A while back, some one explained the resources needed to produce, package and distribute consumables like this exceeds the amount of energy to wash & reuse them. Plus there is less waste washing a dish towel vs using a pack of paper plates that came wrapped in plastic which needs to break down, etc.

Plus, the extra water/energy used to wash a few rags/towels in with the rest of your laundry is very minimal. If you did an entire load for one rag, then you would be wasting a lot.

WebMD article on microwaving sponges

The results showed that two minutes in the microwave at full power killed or inactivated more than 99% of all the living germs and the bacterial spores in the sponges and pads, including E. coli.

you're doing laundry any way so...

I agree - I do towels once or twice a week, so I just throw the handtowels in there with them.

Since I switched to wiping down countertops and the table with hand towels - I go through so many less paper towels per week - it's incredible!

Ditto.

We have around 25-30 towels that we use, so we don't wash them until the last one has been used.

Re: Paper towel use & going green

I have probably a silly question - but when you wash the windows and glass, etc. do you use the microfiber cloths? I would love to stop using so many paper towels, but I worry dish rags and such wouldn't clean as well or leave streaks.
