Painting Formica

Hey Ladies,
Our new place's owners are leaving us there massive wall unit in the living (score because we just have a small black TV stand). Now all our furniture is cherry (ie end table & coffee table) and the wall unit is a pale peach (YUCK). Now we would do this right away, but is it worth it to try and paint it? Will it look far worse? Or should we hang on to it and sell it on craigslist when we are ready to get a whole new living room set (probably in like 1-2 years). Thanks Kerry

Re: Painting Formica

I don't know if I'd try painting it. There's a lot of work involved. You have to first sand it down to take off the finish. Then prime it and then paint. Sometimes sanding doesn't do the trick so you would have to get a liquid "stripper" to strip the furniture of its finish and them prime it and them paint. It's really quite a process. If you can live with it or sell it on Craigslist I would say go that route.

Good luck and congrats on the new house!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am pretty sure I saw a show on HGTV where they painted it. Maybe search thier website.

That's where I got the idea THIS WEEKEND, and it looked great on HGTV, but DH's concern is its TV and it may not look as good in person
