Question about being in the house when painting...

Can pregnant women be in the house when something is being painted. We are planning on painting the nursery this month and I was wondering if it was safe for us PG women to be around. If not then how long do we have to stay away for?

I was told latex paint is OK. However, when Dh paints I do leave for a few hours and ask him to open all of the windows. Mostly, because the smell of paint makes me Chat Icon

Re: Question about being in the house when painting...

Honestly - my DH painted the kitchen one day - it had to be primed and painted, it took him most of the day. I didn't want to inhale the fumes, so he did it on a day I wasn't home. He did it on a day that I was out at a shower and when I came home he had all of the windows and doors open to air it out.

Ok my next problem is that we have a cat. An Indoor one so what do we do with him? Can we close the door to the nursery and keep the window open in that room to air out the paint? I mean it's a very very small room.

The cat should be fine. DH and I ahve done extensive paiting in our house and it never bothered our dog. As far as you go, I think as long as it's latex paint you should be fine. I think the bigger concern is the smell possibly making you sick, not so much the fumes themselves.

But do you think it's fine for us to keep the nursery door locked with the window open? Like I said it's a small room. We just don't want the cat running in that room? and trust me he will...

You could always set up a fan to blow the air toward the window so the fumes get kinda pushed out. Luckily it will be warm this weekend, so you can leave it open all day Sat & Sun if you want.

Re: Question about being in the house when painting...

What about putting a gate up in the doorway - or something to block the cat from going in

Oh no we can't do that with this cat...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon If he can jump on top of the kitchen counters he will jump over a gate. This cat is young and active, he's not even a year old.

Well we are not going to be painting this weekend, but sometime this month. The fan thing sounds like a good idea. We are going to have to keep the door closed otherwise he'll run in. He runs in that room the minute that door opens period...Let's say my FIL (who is most likely going to be painting the room) has to leave the room to use the bathroom or something, the second that door opens he will run in especially since he knows everyone is in there and he can't get in. He'll sit by the door and wait till it opens. He is such a little ****!

Like someone else mentioned, it's going to be a beautiful weekend, so I think you should be fine closing the door and leaving the window open for a few days. If you've got a fan, that would probably help a lot too.

Um...I painted my son's entire nursery myself when I was 9 months pregnant. Yeah, it's okay. Just properly ventilate.

That's right...LOL Like I said the only problem at this point would be keeping the cat out of the room.

Re: Question about being in the house when painting...

DH and I painted the whole nursery ourselves. The doc said it was fine as long as the window was open for ventilation. We only used latex paint also -- it smells less.
