painters tape, i hate you

I have NEVER had a good experience with it. And believe me, i have followed all the advice of how to use it properly.

we painted one wall of our DR last night and taped the ceiling and wall edges (since that wall is a different color than the others will be)
So we actually got a nice clean line this time because we removed the tape while the paint was still wet - however the tape pulled off large chunks of the ceiling paint that was underneath it!

so it either takes off the paint underneath it, or it ends up not sticking enough and letting paint get under it.. i can't win!

i stand by my statement that all painters tape sux!

I hear you. DH bought the green painters tape on accident and I have taken off way too much ceiling & wall paint before I realized it.

The blue doesn't stick as much.

Can you patch the paint easily or do you have to scrape and prep again?Chat Icon

Re: painters tape, i hate you

ITA agree - i HATE painters tape

i Chat Icon that in our first house we don't have any trim to paint - i want to remove the base and leave the spaces on the bottom and top and just have new base and crown installed to save us the trouble Chat Icon

we tried doing stripes once and it came out alright - but we ended up painting over it eventually b/c it wasn't perfect and when i looked at it upclose it bothered me....

so i agree with you if that makes you feel any better hahaha

It's all just a scam to get our $$ and make us think we're doing something right Chat Icon
I wonder what would happen if i used regular masking tape instead, problem is i don't want to take any more chances on trying

i'm not sure how we fix the ceiling right now, it took off the new paint, plus the layer of old paint underneath it, down to the sheetrock!
Guess we'll be sanding it this weekend

i couldn't agree more!

painters tape = migrain

there is this roller that we got from HD that was a lifesaver. it has an applicator for the paint and these little wheels on the top so that you can paint in the corner and without touching the ceiling. no tape!

Re: painters tape, i hate you

I completely agree.

painters tape = paint ripped off walls = buy more paint to repaint walls = buy more tape to cover walls that were just painted = paint ripped off AGAIN = buy more paint, etc...etc...

We ended it all with molding. Covers ALL the mistakes and ripped paint.

Re: painters tape, i hate you

Regular masking tape was even worse than the blue tape for us….and that thing with the wheels on the edge didn’t let us get close enough to the edge. I really hate painting…

I just finished painting my 31st room (yeah, I finally countedChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon )... I only used it along the baseboard of the hardwood floor, otherwise I've gotten so good at "cutting" I no longer need it... slow, steady control of the brush.

Re: painters tape, i hate you

totally agree! hate it. buy a good small brush, either 1 or 2 inches with an angle and cut the edges by hand. Slow and steady and it comes out great. I hate taping. We had to redo so many areas in our house that we try not to use the painters tape anymore.

I never use it. I edge with a good, slanted brush.

DH put it up on the ceiling in a couple rooms after I told him not to and that it was unnecessary. When he took it off, it took the paint off underneath so now we have to re-paint. I was so pi**ed.
