Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
My parents want to get us a bassinet because my mom loves them. I think they are really impractical because once the baby outgrows it, what do you do with it?
I want to get a pack n play because it has the same perks as a bassinet (night feedings, easy to put in our room, travel with, etc...) and when s/he is no longer night feeding, etc.. we will have something we will continue to use.
Am I missing something? Do I need a bassinet? Space is tight -- I just want the basics!

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
I would defintely pick the PNP over the bassinet. It comes in very handy for changing, naps and for containment.

Ditto. We were offered a Bellini cradle and declined it. I see no practical use for it past a few months.

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
I plan on using the PNP as our bassinet, no sense in having another piece of baby equiptment around.

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
I agree with everyone else-- a pack and play can grow with a kid, and you can uh, pack it up and take it with you. It's a much more efficient product than a plain ole bassinet-- as precious as they are.

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
I was torn initially too but I lucked out and a good friend of ours lent us their cradle. I was thrilled since they only go up to 15lbs...........I didn't want to waste the money!! After the baby is too big for the cradle we'll put him/her in their crib. (the baby room is right next to ours) I will keep the pack and play in the den for naps during the day.

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
I personally feel that the bassinett is useless I am using a pack n play until she is ready to go the crib but I guess it is personal choice anyway

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
Well i am lucky enough to have MIL buying the bassinet...and luckily enough i have plenty of room for the PNP and the bassinet. And well i will save the bassinet for the next child as we plan on having lots more!!! So its whatever works!

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
I had both.
I did not want a bassinet. DH insisted. I gave in.
But it was a lifesaver!
When I came home from the hospital, I was still recovering from the c-section. I felt I was ripping everything in me when I was getting up. I was BFing... The bassinet was next to our bed and I am so happy I agreed to have one. Especially when waking up every 2.5 hours.
The PNP was too big to be by my bed side so that would not have worked.
I still use the PNP over a year later with DS (not the bassinet portion though).
If you have to pick only one, get the PNP.
The bassinet was a gift so I felt less bad about spending $$ for it.

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
I was planning on just using the bassinett part of the pnp. Then, one day when I went to BBB - I went there to get sheets and stuff for it and I was talking to the manager and he said they do not recc using it as the baby's full time sleeping place - like ok for naps or at parents or something but not full time. I then went on a quest for a sturdy bassinett b/c i figured that was what was wrong with this one. Anyway, I am so glad that I had the bassinett - my DS was in it in our room for a long time (a little over 4 mos) and it was so sturdy and the best buy ever. I will use it for all my other DC when they are born as well so, I figure, not a waste... Also, I did still keep the pnp and I will say the bassinett I had was much better.

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
Hi, I know that I am not a big poster and I really just started looking on this site from some one I worked with recommending the site, But with this I had a bassinet for my 1st it was great with BFing but know I have a cosleeper for the little one coming home next week. It is the full size one that you have to order online but it is the same size as my pnp and hooks right up to the bed for the first few weeks or longer to make everything easier with middle of the night feedings.

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
Definately a pack n play over a Bassinet- I actually have both since I found a beautiful Bassinet at a consignment store in perfect condition for only $20. But if I had to pick between the two, I still use my Pack n Play but the bassinet was done at month 4 and now just holds blankets waiting for the next baby.

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
If you have the room I would get both...However, if you don't I would go with the Pack n Play..a bassinet will only be used temporarily..until your little one gets into their sleep/feeding schedule...

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
My mom bought us our Pack N Play bc that is what we're most likely going to use when she stays by granma's house but we also got a bassinet for our bedroom for the first month or two when I'm nursing and night feeding. DH wanted to surprise me and get the matching cradle to our crib set, but I thought the price was outlandish for using it for two months! We didn't spend a lot on the bassinet so it made sense!

Jen-you should get the padded pack n play sheet cause the mattress is really hard in the ones I've used(graco Bermuda pattern)-they also sell a different mattress.

Re: Pack n Play vs. Bassinet
DS would not sleep in the PNP when he was a newborn. He would only sleep in the bassinette. He does use the PNP now & sleeps in it for naps, but he did not sleep in it on his own until he was 9 mos or so.

We're going to use both, but only because my sister is giving us my nephew's bassinet. Otherwise, i would just use the pack and play.

My friend is giving me her bassinett so we'll have both. The bassinett will stay in our bedroom and the PNP will stay downstairs in the family room.
