Pacifiers?
What is everyone's opinion on pacifiers? Do you use them? If so, how often and what kind?

Re: Pacifiers?
My son is 3 months old and I use them. They gave him one in the hospital and he immediately took to it. If it helps and soothes him, I find nothing wrong with it when he is so young.
I use the avent ones--he loves them.

Re: Pacifiers?
Delaney did not take a pacifier. However , Peyton uses it to go to sleep. I'm not crazy about her using it but I asked my pediatrician and he said that it helps prevent SIDS. I hope she doesn't become too attached to it so for right now, I'm letting her use it.

Re: Pacifiers?
DD tends to use it only when she's napping.
I also see nothing wrong with it, and it help in preventing SIDS is a HUGE plus.

Re: Pacifiers?
Jared used it for about a month or 2 and then never wanted it again. I used the hospital brand...soothies...they're the safest.

Re: Pacifiers?
I wish Noah would take a pacifier, I think the are great to help calm a baby down and to help them sleep. But I hate seeing 3 year olds with pacifiers!!! Although I wish Noah took one, its one bad habit that I am glad we don't have (don't get me wrong, we already have plenty of bad habits...)

Re: Pacifiers?
Sofai is 4 mos and we still use em (soothies). She only needs it when we put her in the crib to either nap or sleep and spits it out when she is ready to sleep.

Re: Pacifiers?
My Ryan is a binky baby all the way....
He is very attached... I try to limit it to just naps and bedtime.... however sometimes he gets fussy for it during the day....
This will go when I get rid of the bottle.... sometime after his 1st birthday....
ETA- we use the Ma'am- but the "Imagine" John Lennon line... its the only ones he will take...

Re: Pacifiers?
Christopher uses one and I have no problems with it. It soothes him sometimes when nothing else will. I actually got incredibly offended by my Grandmother who said that Christopher "Looks stupid with a binky in his mouth." and then went on about how she NEVER needed to use one with HER children. You need to do what's best for your child. I certainly don't shove it in his mouth every time he makes a peep, only when nothing else works. I just discovered the Playtex Orthopro pacifiers. I love them!

Re: Pacifiers?
Sydney is 5 months and has only really used her avent pacifiers when overtired and cranky. We are starting to work on her not even using it for then because at night if she looses it I have to keep getting up to give it to her.

Re: Pacifiers?
My son didn't like them much at all when he is liittle and I wished he did to help colic. Somehow as he got older he loved them and is still addicted but I only give them at night and naps - for the most part. If he wants them during the day - he is onoly allwoed to play with them in his crib. When I take him out - he knows to throw them back in his crib (although when I am not looking he has been know to steal them out of his crib).
I never pushed them but have to believe maybe my child care did. It was weird - either that or maybe from teething - it soothed him. I planned to take them away at a year but my son didn't get teeth until 13.5 months and teethed forever and it was the only thing that made him feel better and still does (he only has 5 teeth at 16 months).
Anyway, my feelings babies have a natural sucking reflex and if it soothes them - all the best. Hey - they say it is great to protect vs SIDS. But I do believe everything in moderation and limiting as they get older.
When he was younger - he only took the soothies and we had to hold them for him in his mouth. Then he liked only these Pooh ones. Now he has like 7 and the favorite is this cheapy looking on I almost didn't give him - it came in my wishing well and no clue where it came from. He didn't like the Avent type ones or anythign with a similar type nipple.

we use one and she only takes it to fall asleep...but she does fuss in the middle of the night if she loses it (not all the time).
We use a Gerber one, but not the NUK, it's the only one she likes and we tried several kinds. Maybe she'd be willing to use a different one now that she is older

Re: Pacifiers?
I hate pacifiers, Julia never had one. I didnt want to have the trouble weaning her later on when it was time to stop. I saw the trouble my sister went through weaning my neice, such a PITA!! I'm glad I dont have to deal with that now. If you can go with out using one I would! JMO.

Re: Pacifiers?
Joseph has used the advent ones since about 4 weeks old. When he was little like that it was a HUGE help to calm him. I weaned him to just naptime w/ it at 6 mos and now that's the only time he uses it. I plan to start weaning it for nap time around 1.

Re: Pacifiers?
My first used a binky for naps/bedtime only until I *forced* him to give it up at 18 months (I was pg w/ #2 and it was "time"). Aside from watching him have surgery, it was the hardest thing I ever had to do as a mommy. BTW, he only used Avent binks.
I am soooo glad that #2 didn't want anything to do with them (he's almost 10 months now). I definitely didn't want to go through the weaning again.

Re: Pacifiers?
Jack has 3 Nam's. 2 are in his crib and never come out so he only uses them for Naps and Bedtime. And the other one is in my diaper bag for if Mommy is a bad mommy and its naptime and he needs it to help fall asleep in the carseat.
When he looses those they are gone.
