Re: pacifier...
I've read alot about it helping to reduce SIDS, so I figure it's worth it.

Re: pacifier...
While I hope not to become too dependent on pacifiers - if they soothe DC I will use them. I received some at my baby shower and was planning on seeing how they worked (just like the bottles) before deciding which to stick with

Re: pacifier...
We plan on using the pacifier..... our Lamaze instructor made a very good point to us....... the baby needs to suck in order to soothe.... without a pacifier they will use their hands or fingers....... you can take a pacifier away at 1 or 2 years old, you cannot take a thumb away........
We bought a variety of different kinds.....Avent and Nuk mostly......
Good Luck!

Yes I plan on giving my baby a pacifer....however I read that it should be taken away at 6 months old. I hope that isn't going to be a problem...I used my pacifier until I was 5

Re: pacifier...
It is a god send, DS is soothed by his.
And as someone who had to have orthodondia b/c I "found my thumb" instead of having a pacifer I rip DS' fingers out of his mouth and slide in a pacifer

Re: pacifier...
I use one- in fact they gave one to DD in the hospital. I use it for prevention of SIDS and to soothe her. I read that they don't become dependent upon it until around 3 months.

Re: pacifier...
Some babies just aren't interested in pacifiers, my son never was even though I gave him one from day 1. He would suck on his hands. He wasn't a sucky baby anyway! I was pleased about this, one less habit to break!

Re: pacifier...
I plan on using them if she'll take them...mainly for the SIDS reason and for the soothing factor. I would like to go with Avent.

Pacifiers are wonderful! I used it with my son and using it now with my daughter! NUKs are the best!

Re: pacifier...
With my son I planned on limiting use and only if he needed it. He actually hated them when he was little and barely used them so I never forced it - then at 3.5 months I went back to work and somehow - about that same time he became addicted. Now at almost 2.5 - he is still using them - only for sleeping though (and pretty much that way for a very long time).
Personally, after having a child use one - I think some kids just need them to soothe themselves. My son is a horrible teether and still is (he is way behind in teeth) and it is the one and only thing that really helps him through it at night.

I BF my DS and we also use pacifiers when he is fussy & when he is sleeping. He does not rely on it though

My SIL is a speech pathologist and she said it is ok to use it. But she recommends getting rid of it at around 6 mths, and definintely by a year. So that is our plan!

Re: pacifier...
My 1st son never liked it. my 8 month old uses it but I only keep it in his crib for naps and nightime. I dont want him having it in his mouth unless its to sleep. But ladies watch the size. I found my son at one point w the whole thing in his mouth, I dont know how he managed to get it in. I finally found I think Gerber ones that are a litlle bigger

Re: pacifier...
I was really against it, esp. b/c MIL is adament about wanting to give her one, but they said if you are BF to wait at least a month so there is no confusion.
We broke down last night after a 3 hour cry session & it did calm her down.
