Ovulate twice in one cycle?

A little background....my last cycle was abnormally long (43 days instead of the regular 30sih). This month I did opk about half way through the month (didn't mark it down exactly, but I would say somewhere between CD15 and CD20) and I got a double line. DH and I were actively BD, so I figured I wouldn't do anymore opks since I already saw the double line.
I'm CD36 now, I felt strange yesterday, so I decided to take a pregnancy test and an opk just for the heck of it. The pregnancy test was clearly negative, but there was a double line on the opk! I'm so confused...is it possible to ovulate twice in one cycle?

I feel like all the BD was a waste, and we should be doing it now. I don't understand why my cycles are so different all of a sudden.

Re: Ovulate twice in one cycle?

i have 2 lines on my opk most of the time throughout my cycle.
Was the test line just as dark (if not darker) than the control line both times??

Re: Ovulate twice in one cycle?

Both were less dark than the control line, but still pretty dark. I usually have no line or a very faint line which is why I'm even wondering if its possible to ovulate twice.

i dont know which type of OPK you use, but the ones i have say a positive result is when the test line is just as dark or darker than the control line...so maybe you hadnt ovulated when you thought you did earlier this month?

I would start temping next cycle to see if you get a thermal shift which will confirm your ovulation.

Thanks...I think I'm going to have to do something different. These cheap opks are confusing me!

You definitely can't ovulate twice in one cycle. But, you can gear up to ovulate, which might produce a +OPK and not ovulate. Then your body could try again a few days later, producing another +OPK. But actually ovulating can only happen once.

Also, agree with the other poster that the second line has to be as dark or darker than the control line to be positive.

If you notice you keep getting +OPKs you should speak to your dr.

Re: Ovulate twice in one cycle?

if they were less dark it does not sound like a positive..u could have been gearing up one of those times

it is mostly impossible to ovulate twice in one cycle, especially with that many days in between. most likely you never ovulated the first time. a positive OPK (which it doesn't sound like you even had) does not guarantee ovulation.

do you have PCOS?

Re: Ovulate twice in one cycle?

Maybe you girls are right...my body was possibly gearing up to ovulate and never did, but because I stopped testing I'll never know.

I went for blood work and a sonogram last month and the results came back normal. If I had pcos I would know after that right?

Re: Ovulate twice in one cycle?

Crashing but only because I hope I have something to add here...

PCOS is really hard to diagnose. It can sometimes take years of sonos (to look for cysts at different times) and tracking patterns in your cycles. My OB/GYN in NY never diagnosed me with it, despite not getting my period more than 2x before the age of 18 and years of irregular cycles after going off the pill, as well as a history of cysts on and off. My OB OOS where I moved tested me after DD was born and did some blood tests and ordered another sono (I had cysts a few years ago before we were TTC, which we found because I had pain during sex and saw on sonos) and actually didn't find anything that indicated PCOS from the bloodwork but still decided he was ready to give me the diagnosis. So, according to my OB, I have PCOS. But I'm still not sure it's true. I definitely have long, irregular cycles. I do have the symptom where if I don't eat at certain intervals, I get REALLY cranky/dizzy/upset. I get much more regular cycles when I exercise regularly. So he decided all signs point to PCOS and he was ready to call it that.

Then I went and got pg again with no meds when no one was expecting it (my OB was saying he'd put me on metformin when I was ready to start TTC so I would start to ovulate regularly since I only did once in the entire year after DD was born).

So who knows. I don't think that the bloodwork would indicate PCOS, though, just by itself. It's only one small piece in the puzzle. If you have diabetic-like results, that's an indication of PCOS, though.

OPKs don't work if you have PCOS. But I understand temping can. Watching for EWCM can too, if you're ovulating on your own.

My OB always said that if I'm getting my period, he believes I'm ovulating 2 weeks before that. Seems to have been true.

My non-doctorly advice is to just keep trying... I got pregnant on CD47 with DD and CD63 the second time. If you have long cycles, you just never know. If you've been trying for a few months (my GP had said 6 months when we first started) and/or are getting frustrated, talk to the doctor about more detailed tests you can do or other ways to predict ovulation. Hopefully it's just a matter of getting the timing right. Wishing you lots of baby dust!!

Re: Ovulate twice in one cycle?

Thanks for the info on pcos. I'm definitely going to be paying more attention now that my cycles are out of wack. I just bought a thermometer so I am definitely going to start temping. And I'm certain timing w/ dh is now playing a huge factor in this whole process...thanks for the baby dust!

Re: Ovulate twice in one cycle?

My doctor said it is possible to ovulate twice in one month, but it's extremely rare.
