Our Basement Leaked!
At least it didn't flood though.
DH and I couldn't make it in to work today without taking like 10 buses, so we gave up and stayed home. DH drove over to our house (we're still in our co-op for a couple more weeks) and found the basement had leaked. The carpeting down there is pretty wet.
Crap! We've got a million and one appts. set up over the next couple weeks with floor people, movers, doctors, etc. but I guess now we'll need to get someone in to look at this.
Who do you even call about a leaky basement? Or am I jumping the gun? There was an unusual amount of rain today, so maybe my hormones are getting the better of me.
Oh well, I guess the joys of being a homeowner could be kicking in now.
Thanks in advance for any information!

Oh no! We are worried about the same thing. My MIL called my DH and told him she heard it was flooded in Lindenhurst. Crap!!! We are probably headed there tonight ourselves.
I would call a general contractor probably. I hope everything turns out ok with the basement.

Re: Our Basement Leaked!
Thanks! We'll probably just clean this up for now, though if the carpet gets moldy from the water, we'll need to pull it out. DH said it wasn't so bad, but it was very wet in places. I feel like we need to focus on moving in, and I suppose this can wait a little bit.
He called again to say the gutters were extrememly clogged at the front of the house (near the part of the basement that leaked), so I'm hoping if we clear the gutters, that should take care of it. Now we just need a ladder...
I hope your house didn't get water inside today!

Re: Our Basement Leaked!
Get it fixed now, b/c any other rain, or snow later in the year could damage the foundation.
Call a contractor and if they don't do it, ask for a referral.

The gutters could be the problem, but I would get this looked at now because it could be a big problem like Pot of Luck said. Good Luck with the basement! I'll let you know tomorrow if our house is ok. Fingers crossed!

Re: Our Basement Leaked!
DEFINITELY get a contractor down there. also, bring in heater/fans to dry the carpet. This is very frustrating, but can be fixed

Re: Our Basement Leaked!
Thanks! It wasn't so terrible, though it's hard to get the water up completely with the carpet. We did the best we could.
I wish we owned fans! We don't though, since we didn't need them in our co-op (ceiling fans there). Looks like we'll be buying some soon, along with a ladder. DH cleaned some gunk out of the gutters, but couldn't get at everything. The front gutters were REALLY clogged, with leaves, dirt, all kinds of stuff. The water was just running right off the roof in a cascade apparently, and pooled up below. That's where the water got in the basement.
We're hoping cleaning the gutters will do the trick until we're living there (about another 3 weeks). We want to have a contractor come in around that time anyway for another issue, so we'll ask him about the basement then. If it keeps up though, I guess we'll have to get him in sooner.
I'm just starting to feel like we're both going to get fired soon for taking time off to let these folks in, plus we have a slew of doctor's appts. lately. I wish one of us didn't work in the city, but since we both do, we leave early and get home late.

This happened to us last year. We laid the carpet down and exactly one week later the basement flooded. The gutters were jam packed with debris and the water just filled our window well until there was no where else for it to go but in the basement. We cleaned out the gutters, put a sump pump system in place and bought window well covers. No problems since (knock on wood).
