Anyone have any good organization projects going as the new year approaches?

Just ordered a hanging closet organizer for board games but that's as far as I've gotten this year. I also reorganized my pantry and gave up another shelf to craft supplies. I'd love to hear or see what people are doing. I could use some inspiration!

I would like to streamline my kitchen. I have stuff that I rarely or never use (do I need 4 colanders). I hate the space the slow cooker takes up.
I have a small galley kitchen that needs to be less crowded. I can convert part of my linen closet to be for kitchen stuff. Already use one shelf for baking pans.

I would also like to tackle the attic. Too much stuff up there.

I'm trying to do each room a little each day. 20 minutes a day. I found this cool way of using a shoe holder to hold dd's princess dolls and barbies so dh is going to measure this week to see if it will work. My basement is my ultimate goal this year.

I put one of the clear shoe pocket organizers on the back of my coat closest and it's been great. I keep plastic bags in the top, sunscreen, bug spray, stain remover under that. Near the bottom each of us has a pocket for hats and gloves and I even stick the kids' fleeces in there. So easy to see where everything is and takes advantage of otherwise wasted space.

I love to organize and I have a one bedroom apartment for the three of us so it always feels like the stuff is on top of us. We do however have a garage that is not being used to its full potential. It is not insulated so its freezing out there already but in spring I'm hoping we can tackle that. I wish I set it up better this summer.

I need to redo my food pantry it is a mess.

I just recently redid my freezer and it is so nice!!

For my DD's toys which are just exploding since the holidays I mostly just use rubbermaids. I could own 100 more. Everything goes in a box. If only I had a closet to shove the boxes in, now they just get stacked in the living room.

Yes - we just finished 1/2 of our basement as a play area. I need to finish organizing it and then tackle the rest of the house!!!

I went to Marshall's one day and bought a bunch of small clear bins, jars and Rubbermaid containers with lids on various sizes and completely redid my pantry. I put down new contact paper on the shelves too. It was cheap and easy to do. It looks great and everything is nice and organized.

Get a box of garbage bags. Throw away at least half of what you have. The stuff you haven't touched in a year. Makes organizing 100% times easier.

We've been doing this for the past 6 months. Garbage man must think we are crazy. But it is SO much better. We just take an area, throw away a majority of the stuff, then see what is left and figure out how to organize. So much better. We've gone thru the basement, the linen closet, the kitchen area, etc. It feels good to be 'lighter'.

Re: Organizing!

ugh, I'm overwhelmed. I feel like every drawer, every closet, every nook and cranny needs work.

I made a lot of progress during thanksgiving in the kitchen - oversized drawers for utensils and junk are amazing now. Spices all cleaned and organized.

I need to tackle our storage closet and garage, that way I can shove more stuff in those storage areas and declutter the house.

So hard to accomplish this while kids are right behind you messing it all up again

Organizing!

Last January I turned all the hangers in my closet backwards. As I wore something the hanger got turned around. Going to clean out today anything that didn't get turned around in the last year. It's a lot of clothes that will be being donated.

Peter Walsh (professional organizer who's written several books) does a 31 Day Challenge each January with a quick daily task. You can find it on his Facebook page. Also Apartment Therapy has a "January Cure" with daily tasks. I have purged a lot over the last few years but need a little more direction to wrap it up.

I agree and it feels good after its done. but i live with two other people and my husband and daughter dont agree. My husband was raised by a hoarder and he is kinda materialistic. loves to buy more and more things even if its a only use two times a year kinda thing. So everytime i clear a space, he fills a space. and everyone spoils my dd so she doesnt want to get rid of anything. it keeps growing and i say we need to donate the older stuff and she just throws a fit. i want her to give it away willingly not against her will so it is very hard. I've purged of so much of my stuff already its insane. plus when my mom died I started taking all of her stuff, so it is really hard to get rid of the amount I would like to.

I don't necessarily have one project, but I am getting sick of keeping stuff that I don't use. I'm trying to be better with throwing things way. I tend to do "Well, what if I need it in 10 years...." But now, I am chucking stuff I don't use.

A dumpster.
And or a match and lighter fluid.
Or a wrecking ball.

I am way beyond a New Year's organizing project using cute little bins or closet organizers.
Way beyond.

My house would be enough to make a professional organizer reconsider their career choice.

We changed our thinking on this.

Sure, I may want to use this Cuisinart 10 years from now. But, would I really? Wouldn't I want a new one, not one that is 20 years old? So what is the point of keeping it?

Re: Organizing!

I have also got to clean out FIL''s apartment, since he won't be going home.
It''s a 2 bedroom hoarder apartment so it will be a challenge. Every box, envelope, bag has to be gone thru to make sure nothing valuable is in there.
I have to make some room so that DH can get in to work with me.
It''s disgustingly filthy. We need respirators and hazmat suits, just like they do on Hoarders. I figure about 5 trucks to haul all the garbage and crap away.

I am having my laundry room/office re-done by California Closets and I can NOT WAIT!!. It will give me so much needed storage space and help me de-clutter and organize all of my cleaning supplies, ziplocs, etc.
I just bought a huge bottle of shampoo at BJ's only to realize I already had 2 in the linen closet, smooshed behind towels! Argh!! Did I mention I CAN'T WAIT???
