Opinions Please (Ped related)

I just called the Ped for a same day visit for my son who has a fever (possible ear infection). When I called to make the appointment, I was given an appointment with a doctor I prefer not to see. There are several doctors in the office, but this is the only one I prefer not to see.
I was told that when I call for a same-day visit, I cannot be picky about doctors. I have to take who they have availability with.
Personally, this irks me. If I don't want to see a specific doctor, I think it's wrong for them to force me into it. Would you see a doctor you don't like because you HAD to?
They gave me an appt with another doctor but basically "scolded" me into not asking for it again.

If that was the only dr in the office that day and my LO was sick- then I would see them. It's better than not being seen at all, kwim?
But apparently they had another dr in because they gave you an appt with them after you protested.
Not sure why they scolded you in that case.

i met with 2 pediatrician offices before dd was born. both offices told me the same thing...when you come for a same day sick visit you have to see whoever is available. we also have one dr in the practice that we dont like, but if we have to see him its better to have a doctor look at DD then wait an extra day til we see someone we like.
i am frustrated by that policy too but i get it. they are making accommodations to squeeze you in and they want to do it without disrupting the scheduled appointments. i think you are lucky that they gave you an appt with another doctor.

edit to add: my general practice doctor group has the same policy - if they are seeing me for a sick visit i am stuck seeing whoever is available.

Wow, I had the SAME experience one week ago today!

I didn't even bother asking who he would be seen by though. It turns out he got the one doctor I dislike in the whole practice...out of five! It was fine, he confirmed an ear infection, prescribed antibiotics, and that was it. No big deal at all. Sometimes you need to just suck it up. Then I made the follow-up appt with my favorite doctor.

Is it just that you prefer not to see that doctor, or was there an issue with him/her? If there was an issue, I think it's acceptable to request not to see him/her, but I would be willing to if my child were sick and needed to see a doctor that day and they were the only one available.

Re: Opinions Please (Ped related)

There are several Drs in our practice and our ped is PT so when I call for a sick visit and she isn't there I will request one other dr that I like
If he isn't available than I take what I can get within reason. sometimes if they only have a dr i really dont like ill call the nexr day but I have never been scolded for asking for a specific dr.
That's crappy of them IMO

The last time I brought my DS to see her, it took her 3 visits and a week to correctly diagnose a bad diaper rash. There have been other indicators to me that she is not a stable person. I don't like her style of practice. I have been going to that office way longer than she has been on staff so she was not a factor when I started going there.

IMO when my DS is sick I take whoever is available.

THere are 5 Drs in my DS's practice and I def have an order in which I would liek to see them but I would rather have my DS see any Dr when they are sick than not seeing one.

If you only want to see a certain Dr then I would go to a solo practice.

But what about if you joined a solo practice because you liked a doctor....
...then they added a new doc on staff and forced you to see the other one?

That's how I feel. This doctor was added years after I have been going there. I don't think it's fair to force me to see her when she was never my choice.

You know?

I understand why you are upset as there is a doctor at my ped's office that I can not stand and have no respect for. But, if you are calling for same day- you have to take whoever is available. They aren't going to bump someone out of an appointment for you especially if you think it is something common like an ear infection. So, you have to just grin and take your little one in. I hope your son feels better!

If they added a Dr that I didn't like that much then I would change.

IMO when there are mutilple Drs you can't expect to get the ones you liek for a sick visit. for a sick visit you get who you get and be happy they got you in or move on.....just my opinion.

In our practice - you get who you get, even for a well visit. You can request a specific dr but, usually it means you will have to wait.

I would see whomever was available for a sick visit.

I have one doctor I don't like - when I call and my doctor is not available they give me any other one who is available- but they are fine with me saying I don't want to see such and such doctor

I only see the one I don't like on a sunday if I need to bring someone in because there is only one doc in on sundays

Re: Opinions Please (Ped related)

In my peds office it's like that. Sick visits we often have to suck it up and see the doctor who is the "sick visit" doctor for the day. Usually the one person we really don't like to see.
I don't see it as wrong for you to request a different doctor if you obviously have strong feelings about her, but I woudn't expect them to be able to accomodate you all the time.
It is frustrating though so I feel your pain. Hope your LO is feeling better soon!! Chat Icon

I think they aren't wrong, especially the day before a holiday.

They are trying to fit you in before a long weekend and you are complaining about who you want to see, I don't blame them.

Re: Opinions Please (Ped related)

For a sick visit, you get who you get. I believe in most peds offices there is some sort of "sick visit" rotation.

As another poster said, it's also the day before a major holiday, so they are probably swamped with sick visits right now.

If you really are unhappy, I would head to PM Peds. I honestly haven't been to our peds for a sick visit in a long time, as my kids seem to get sicker as the night goes on, lol!!

I don't think it's right that they "scolded" you. If there are other doctors working, they should just check if the one you want has open appointments. If there was only a dr I didn't like available, I would see them if I felt I needed an immediate appointment.

I can understand being upset if its a regularly scheduled visit. Being that you're LO is sick and it sounds like when you originally became a part of the practice it was a solo practitioner, I think it's great that he added another Dr. There is more availability in emergency situations such as yours when typically many offices are not open or reduce their hours for holidays.
