Opinions please
My oldest son, who is 6, has befriended a little boy who is always at my house playing. We have become me good friends with the family. He has an older sister who is about 10. I have a two toddlers also. Whenever she comes over with her brother, she loves playing with the two little ones. Yesterday, I had some things that I needed to get done at home and I was on my own with the three boys. I asked the sister if she wanted to come over and play with my two little ones basically to keep them occupied so that I could get done what I needed to get done. She was happy to do so. I told her to bring a friend if she wanted. She came for about 2 hours and played with them. She was great. After she left, it dawned on me that maybe I should have paid her? I don’t know. Is that weird though? I definitely don’t think she was expecting to be paid But now I’m wondering if I should have. Would you have paid her?

I would pay her as a mother’s helper. I’d probably call the mom first and discuss it with her.

At 10?? I doubt she thought it was for money. If you did, maybe 5 or 10 dollars an hour. But I agree ask the mom.

Nah. I wouldn’t necessarily have paid her... but it would be nice to buy her a nice treat (gift card for someplace local) especially if you are using her to keep kids occupied.

This. I would buy her a small gift as a thank you. If you decide to use her again then I would discuss it with her parents.

i would give her something, since it sounds like you invited her over with whole point of watching your younger kids. i would get her a GC for like $15 for this time, and then talk with her mom about it for the future. see what she thinks. it sounds like it could work out really great for both of you all around- maybe even use her for dates nights in a few years. so you don't want to start off on eh wrong foot! LOL

What do you pay a 10 year old mother's helper? I'm still making lunch, getting snacks, changing diapers, breaking up fights, etc. $5/hour? $8/hour? I feel like $10 is a lot for what she's doing. There are regular babysitters that make that. What if she brings her friends? There's 3 of them that are always together. Do I pay the friends too?

I think $8 an hour is good if she’s just playing with your kids. I wouldn’t let her bring friends if you are paying her though.

I think $8 an hour is good if she’s just playing with your kids. I wouldn’t let her bring friends if you are paying her though.
I know her friends because they are always together. She thought she could only bring one of them with her on Saturday so to avoid drama, she decided to just come by herself. I told her in the future she could bring them both because they all love to play with my little guys and they are all great girls. I don't have a problem with them coming at all. In fact, I know my boys would love it but I am going to have quite an expensive morning if I'm paying all 3 of them to play so I can fold laundry in peace. LOL

Yes, you should have paid her. At 10yo I was a mother's helper and got paid for it. I think $5/hr and rounding up is fine because you're home. Sounds like she's the perfect person to "train" to be your f/t babysitter in a few years!

I would have paid her! Probably would've given her like $10. I am sure she would have loved it and appreciated it. My DD who is 7 is always looking for ways to make money

I wouldn't pay her unless you discussed it with her parents. I think a nice thank you gift is perfect for this one time. If it's regular thing, maybe consider $5 an hour. I mean she is only 10.

I have a mother’s helper who just turned 13 this month. She charges $8 an hour but always offers to come for free since she loves playing with my younger ones and I feed her and take her fun places so I guess she feels bad.
I would talk to the mother and see what she thinks. I think $20 for 3 hours is fair.

I agree. I wouldn't feel comfortable with my 10 year old making any more than that. I also wouldn't pay her without discussing it with her parents.

I dont think you need to pay her. I think helping others is a good lesson. At 10 I would never have been paid and would not expect it. She did it for the pure enjoyment and that in and of its self is enough, A thank you goes a long way. JMO
if you used her again, not sure you need to pay her. You can treat her to ice cream or ice. Maybe a small gift

I agree with this. Remember it happening a lot as a kid. I would def thank them with a present but wouldn’t make it a “job”... especially since they are only around 10 years old. Plus, you are ultimately responsible for those 10 year olds in your house.
