OMG tell me I am not the only parent

Definitely think this is more subjective and depends on what you believe in. I don't see it as that bad but I know other moms would consider it absolutely cruel.

When I was a kid, my mom would put homemade hot sauce in my mouth and make me hold it for a minute or so before I could swallow it. Her sauce was CRAZY hot and it burned like whoa. I was about 7, and I definitely thought twice about lying to her for quite awhile after that. Someone today might say "omg CHILD ABUSE!" but I just consider it a lesson learned.

A little drop or two of hot sauce as punishment for biting does not seem so horrible to me, but again, very subjective to each parent.

IMO whether or not you agree with this form of discipline, I think 2 is way too young to be putting hot sauce or soap in their mouth. Maybe when they are older and can comprehend the threat of it it might be effective, but I think 2 is too young.

ITA

And as a mandated reporter, I can tell you that it is absolutely considered child abuse but I would also consider the context.

ITA. I could never ever do it! I also think it is considered child abuse at last in Alaska it is. I remember that mother who appears on Dr. Phil and was taped putting hot sauce in her sons mouth and was arrested for child abuse. Just found this video

Agreed. DH had his mouth washed out with soap after cursing in front of his mother but he was 13. He got the message. Also, I read somewhere that children's taste buds are more sensitive than adult taste buds. That would deter me from using hot sauce on DS.

I agree with those that found this cruel and disgusting, and I used to work in child advocacy and I 100% believe this is child abuse. The kid is TWO. Even if the kid was older it's still horrible.

I have done soap and vinegar and you know what the behavior I wanted to stop did. My per. also recommended it. I did make him drink a glass of vinegar or hold a bar of soap in his mouth. It would a few drops of vinegar on my finger enough for him to taste it. The soap was the same thing.
I also agree that there isn't enough punishment and some kids don't respect there parents.

I do think that 2 year old is too young to be putting anything in a child's mouth. I have a 2 year old and I would never think to do it.

I'm with the OP on this one...I would never do that to my son. It does seem cruel.

Kids go through phases...it's important for parents to know about these phases and their time frames. When I was younger, I sucked my thumb and my godmother put tobasco sauce on my thumb and made me suck it. I obviously never forgot it...

hot sauce or pepper can burn a child's esophagus and cause the tongue to swell -- a potential choking hazard. Even soap...do you know what's in it? Would you eat it? Not to mention allergic reactions or fear of being hurt or threatened to be hurt. I don't know for me I can't look at my child being pained by something I do to them.

I agree with you. To me, forcing your child to ingest something seems worse than a spank on the toosh. At just 2 years old if I fed my son hot sauce his poor little bootyhole would be on fire.

ETA: I wouldn't judge someone for spanking if they felt nothing else was working. I'd judge them for beating their child or using excessive force...but a little swat on the tush or hand doesn't bother me...the ingesting just doesn't sit well though.

I've dealt with the same thing with my son and I've even put my mouth on his arm and threatened to bite him back out of frustration. I understand the frustration...but forcing them to ingest things that could harm their intestines or forcing them to eat non edible items just seems cruel.

I wouldn't do hot sauce, but I did put a drop of soap in DDs mouth when she was being nasty to me. Now I just have to mention it and she shapes up.

Re: OMG tell me I am not the only parent

I believe anything that intentionally causes physical discomfort to a child is abuse , hot sauce , soap , smacking , biting back . I believe kids lead from example so if you cause them intentionally pain or discomfort they believe its ok to do the same to others . So in my mind parents that do these things had them done to them by their parents, following by example . Never ok

I had a biter and it's SOOO frustrating. I was told to do all those things. I never did them.

I personally couldn't do it.

But if you think of the kid on the other end, that is getting bit at school by your kid. They are getting abused.

If it was caught at the moment it happened, a drop of hot sauce would probably make him think twice.

I agree, we are all nicey nicey worried about our kids feelings. There is a terrible lack of respect among the young today. I find it horrible. I dont know if there is a connection there, but I miss when kids/ teenagers respected police, adults, behaved correctly.

I'm not saying that the things described in the OP would be options for me, but apparently the only acceptable form of discipline is time outs.

IMO this is why we have middle schools and high schools FULL of disrespectful brats who have no respect for authority. They grow up never experiencing any unpleasant consequences.

I'm all set with this type of punishment. It's not for me.

I have plenty of family members that don't have a problem with this type of discipline. Some of the things I've seen leave me Chat Icon I wait till I leave to talk shit about them behind their backChat Icon

But hey if this is the route you want to go with your kid who am I to judge.

I never had biters, but I do know hat simple time us don't work with my kids. I can't say id never do it, if it became such a big problem, I can see grasping for something that might work.

p

I had to do this once and it worked
Many other mommies I know have done the same.
I know use soap to threaten DS when he talks back and so far I haven't had to actually do it but I WILL if I have to.
Some times time outs just don't work.
I'm pretty old school when it comes to some things. I was smacked as a kid and I learned my lesson fairly quick.

I don't subscribe to the belief that the lack of spanking is why children are disrespectful. I was BEATEN as a child (bloody noses, bumps, belt marks) it didn't make me behave better...it made me learn to be sneakier so I wouldn't get caught.

I don't want my child to fear me...I want him to respect me.

Re: OMG tell me I am not the only parent

For all you that think its "cruel" or "child abuse", can I ask, has your child ever been bit by another child?

My daughter was bit by a boy around 2 yr old. Totally unprovoked. He broke skin. I had to take her to the Dr. My did is extremely outgoing and independent. This happened at a party. She was traumatized after that. Cried unconsolably, wouldn't let my dh or I put her down. It took a few days before I was able to bring her around other kids. It took about a week to heal too.

So really, what is more "cruel"? Is it worse parenting to use a little hot sauce to teach a lesson or is it worse to just let your kid bite people?

OMG tell me I am not the only parent

I wouldn't do it to my DS - he's almost 3.

We're currently going through him biting others right now. I'am trying a lot of different things to get him to understand it is wrong, but I will draw the line at something like this. It's a phase and he will grow out of it.

To each their own...I just think this is a bit much for a toddler.

It wouldn't be my preference for discipline, but I feel indifferent towards what other parents may choose to do. They probably have their reasons for doing so.

Every time spanking gets brought up someone always references full on beating. Beating a child is a completely different thing than spanking. Anytime a parent loses control or reacts in anger it is abusive, and almost everyone agrees with that.

Personally, I was talking about having consistent rules with clear consequences for not following those rules. If my daughter starts biting other kids and time outs aren't working, I should be able to administer whatever consequence has been decided on and made clear to her. It's far from abusive, and it's for her own good (and the good of her victims). Kids learn very quickly who is in control and I've seen first hand situations where the kids are most definitely running the show. If time outs and taking away toys works for my kids, great! If not I'm not going to be afraid to go further.
