OMG, I am FUMING **UPDATE**

i'm actually at my dad's house using his computer, THAT'S how pizzzed i am.....

please tell me if i'm overreacting...

DD is in the 10th grade

today she stayed after school for 'xtime' for a particular class

DH called her to find out what time he should get there to pick her up, as the times vary. (we've always called each other to find out pick up times/location, never a problem)

The "teacher" could be heard in the background telling DD: "tell him the truth...tell him where you really are!!" Chat Icon Chat Icon Naturally, not expecting to hear this from a teacher...DH asks DD, "who is that?" Chat Icon DD responds, it's the ____ teacher. Okaayyyy

The teacher then proceeds to tell DD: "c'mon, tell him the truth...tell him I'm the janitor" Chat Icon Chat Icon

DH at this point is starting to get pizzzed. He couldn't believe that a TEACHER would behave this way. So he called me to tell me what just transpired.

I, in turn, call DD. DD picks up. I could hear the "teacher" in the background saying "OH BROTHER, here we go again." Chat Icon Of course, I ask to please speak with the teacher. The teacher gets on the phone and the first thing he says to me: "Don't you trust your daughter?" Chat Icon Chat Icon UMMMMM EXCUSE ME?????? I ABSOLUTELY trust my daughter!!!!! What I am having a PROBLEM with, is the fact that a TEACHER, someone who is supposed to conduct themselves in an appropriate, professional manner, is doing anything but!!! I understand, as he put it, he likes to "have FUN in the classroom" -- but there's a difference between making the learning experience FUN, and being an azz. HE, was being an AZZ!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon
I am LIVID!!!!!!! Am I crazy to be this upset???

*****************
UPDATE:

So, I sent this letter yesterday to the principal and asst. principal:

Dear Principal ___________,

{ the first paragraph basically details what transpired, and the conversations that took place --- so I just edited out for space}

We cannot begin to tell you how disturbing this is to us on so many levels. Not only did _________________ undermine our authority in the presence of our daughter, but his behavior was beyond inappropriate and unprofessional. This isn’t about trusting our daughter. We trust her implicitly. This is about ___________________’s appalling behavior.

There are boundaries that need to be set and maintained between the teacher and student. __________________ overstepped those boundaries today. While we agree, there should be a cohesive, friendly, environment in the classroom setting, ______________ took it to another level, which is unacceptable. In addition, the implication that there was a questionable situation going on involving our daughter is even more disturbing to us. To suggest that she lie to her parents, and “admit” to being with the janitor is absolutely ludicrous, and sets a horrible example.

Is ________________ familiar with the ______ High School creed?

WATCH YOUR THOUGHTS
THEY BECOME YOUR WORDS
WATCH YOUR WORDS
THEY BECOME YOUR ACTIONS
WATCH YOUR ACTIONS
THEY BECOME YOUR CHARACTER
WATCH YOUR CHARACTER
IT BECOMES YOUR DESTINY

When we send our child to school, we are entrusting her to the care of her teachers and the staff at ______________. And we do so with the belief that she is in a productive learning environment where she feels safe and comfortable. Unfortunately, because of __________________’s behavior, we must respectfully request that she be removed from his class immediately, and placed in another during the same time period. We thank you for arranging to meet with us tomorrow, November 20th at 9:00 a.m., and we look forward to discussing this matter in further detail.

Sincerely,
...

_________________________

So we get there this morning, and the Princ. acknowledges that she received the email, and thanks us for contacting her. Of course, I thank her for taking the time to meet with us.

Not once did she and the asst princ. make any excuse for the teacher. In fact, they both apologized for his behavior, and completely agreed with everything we felt/said. He was out of line, inappropriate, and his behavior was inexcusable.

Then, HE Showed up. Chat Icon

AT FIRST, he was VERY defensive, and was actually JUSTIFYING his behavior, by saying that's just how he is -- trying to joke around all the time to lighten the mood... Chat Icon He accused my DH of calling DD FIVE TIMES Chat Icon Chat Icon (LIES) (mind you, the teacher is still STANDING, while we are all sitting at the table)
DH started to get up from his seat Chat Icon and we all just started saying...ok...let's all calm down....Chat Icon Chat Icon
I swear, I wanted to jump across the table and choke that idiot, as did DH.

After reiterating what I wrote in the letter, and asking him how, as a father, how HE would have felt had the shoe been on the other foot. How would HE have reacted???? THEN, his tune changed. He acknowledged that he was out of line, and that what he did/said was inappropriate. He apologized for upsetting us, and reassured us that it would never happen again. (No kidding) He said his teaching style is a bit different than other teachers....and what works with some students, doesn't work with all. Well, it obviously doesn't work with our child.
He went back to class, and that was the end of the meeting with him.

We then asked that DD be brought down. Together, the princ., asst principal, DD, and us, all weighed in on what the best option would be for her. She felt uncomfortable in his class (and had been from the beginning - not only because of his "friendly, joking" nature, but because his teaching methods simply didn't work for her, and she was struggling from the getgo to "get" the material) She TRIED to make it work, hence attending Xtime, but it just wasn't working.

So....end result - she's got a new teacher, and her entire schedule wasn't disrupted! Both the princ. & asst. princ. thanked us again for coming to them and asked that we continue to be involved in our child's education. They both stated how important every child is to them and that their goal is for their students to excel. So, we're very satisfied with how they handled this situation.

It depends. If this teacher is known to be a jokester, I'd let it slide. If not...yeah, I'd be pissed.

I think I'd be firing off an email to the teacher & cc'ing the principal. That is absolute BS.

It's not about trusting yoru daughter. It's about hearing someone lie in the background. I don't find it funny. What if she was being taken advantage of by the teacher or the janitor? IMO, he's lucky you didn't overreact with a cop showing up at school.

Re: OMG, I am FUMING

You have all the right to be upset. I can't understand why the teacher would conduct himself in that way. If he wants to joke around with the students - that is fine but don't pull this crap with parents. UUGHHChat Icon Doesn't he think that having a teenage girl and hearing a man saying things like those are going to worry and pizz a parent off. Chat Icon

pretty much

i've never met this teacher before (PT conference is next week) -- so i'm not sure if he falls into the "jokester" category or not. if that is the case, and I was familiar with this teacher, then I probably would have laughed it off "ha ha, very funny" sort of thing. but I was SO taken aback by it!!!

another point

WHAT IF i was an abusive parent, someone who was mistrusting of their teenager -- and believed that she was in fact lying - and when she got home, got a beating -- what then???? this teacher just put this child in a horrible position, kwim?

This was my feeling on it.

I would be beyond upset. And agree with Barb. I would either be sending an email or taking a visit up to the school.
