Old wives tale about potty training?

My dad thinks that a sign of readiness to toilet train is that DS can bring me something, like a toy. He thinks this will translate to ds being able to "give me" a poop or pee in the toilet.

Is this an old wives tale? This has got to be the silliest thing I ever heard. DS understands a lot and if I point to a book or a toy on the floor and ask for it he'll go get it but he has no clue about toilet training! Every time my dad visits he asks if I started toilet training. (DS is 18 months old)

Have never heard of that old wives tale, but who knows?! My mother potty trained me at 18 months, so it is possible.

Not that you can't potty train at 18 months old BUT that reasoning just sounds silly to me, I don't think one thing has anything at all to do with the other.

Old wives tale about potty training?

18 months sounds young, but mom tells me I was potty trained at 24 months.

I think it's hard to deal with a young potty trained kid.

But, I'm pretty sure when I was a kid, kids were potty trained earlier. Yes, with small bladders it is harder... But not impossible.

DS was potty trained at 26 months easily.

DD is ready now, but I'm just too lazy to restart that process.

I agree. I also can't imagine a child being potty trained who cannot verbally tell you they need to go.

Old wives tale about potty training?

Ds was potty trained at 22 months and it took us only 4 day. Some kids, and some moms, are ready early.

That's what I try to tell him. Regardless of age, that reasoning makes no sense to me. That's why I wondered if anyone had heard this old wives tale...

I don't doubt that some kids are ready early. Just my son is nowhere near there yet.
