I dont understand why people do this in the first place? Is it just for vanities sake? Honestly, Id much rather poop on the table then have explosive diarrhea while simultaneously having contractions.

And youd feel better about what or from what?

I say ABSOLUTELY NOT.

First: eeeeeewwwww!
Second: I agree completely.

I'm not. With DC #1 my DH swears that nothing like that happened. I think with labor being so long, I was able to clear most of the plumbing before hand on my own. Chat Icon

For those of you afraid of pooping on the table during delivery - honestly, I promise, it's the last thing you could possibly focusing on at that moment. Chat Icon

Re: OK, I'm just gonna come out and ask....

This time around may be different, but for my DD - TMI TMI - I was pretty "cleaned" out. I didn't know I would be going into labor that night, but I went #2 at least 3 or 4 times that day.

They didn't offer me one at the hospital either.

To be honest I hadn't even thought that much about it.

However, my Mom almost couldn't deliver my little brother because her bowels were blocking his way (sorry, TMI) and if they hadn't given her one he would have gone into distress, so.....I don't know. I'm going to talk to my doc about it.

Re: OK, I'm just gonna come out and ask....

I delivered at Huntington and wasn't given a choice. The nurse said "OK time for the enema" and I didn't protest. Yes it was very uncomfortable sitting on a toilet while having contractions. I have no idea if I pooped while pushing - I assume not since I had the enema, but I didn't ask and DH didn't offer the information. I have to say that while pushing, it was nice to know that what was coming out was a baby and related fluid and not poop - one less thing for me to stress over.

Def don't think is necessary AT ALL!! If you poop on the table they clean is sooo quickly no one notices anyway.

Re: OK, I'm just gonna come out and ask....

I never thought of that as an option and unless my doctor tells me to, then no. First of all I'm kinda far from the hospital I am delivering at and do not think it would be cool if I had to stop at a gas station to use the bathroom while in labor or dripping amnionic fluid. I am not concerned so much about the pooping. I heard once you are in the throws of all of this all modesty goes out the window anyway. Besides I'm sure it would not be the first time the doc would have seen poo and I heard the nurses are pretty quick with cleaning it up. I just told DH not to look until after the baby is pretty much out for this reason.

Re: OK, I'm just gonna come out and ask....

Funny that a lot of you said that DH shouldn't look and his head should stay by your head. When I had DS the labor team was insisting he watch the baby being born and kept calling him over, even asking him to feel the baby's head. I suppose he could have said no but he didn't want to appear to be queasy, and besides I am sure he has seen worse. The other thing (from what I heard from friends) is that even if you don't see your wife poop, you definitely smell it and know!

this is one of those things that make me cringe. I am so shy when it comes to bodily functions. I don't think I'd get an enema....I feel like that might be worse.

I have heard that most ppl don't even know they do it and no one pays attention. Well, I know someone who will notice..DH! He'll make sure to tell me about it afterwards and I know I'll be embarrassed!! LOL.

I'm with you word for word! I have thought about the issue of pooping but never thought about getting an enema.
It's something I might do should I feel like I have not "cleared house."

My DH sounds like your DH! I would be mortified, but then again this is me typing this sans contractions.

No, my body knows what it has to do naturally...

It was a concern to me pooping while pushing but it isn't uncommon to happen... DH was right down there the whole time and swears I didn't even though it sure felt like I did...

Exactly! I KNOW I did, and more than once too... however, in all honesty, while you are pushing, that's the LAST thing on your mind! It's no big deal IMO.
