Office receptionist

Omg, I'm sitting in the orthodentist office listening to the office manager and dental hygienist complain about all the parents and patients. "She's always late, she always rescheduling," and so on, how unprofessional. There are at least 3 other parents in the waiting room with me. And this isn't the only time it's every time I'm here. Just a vent. I wish they had a suggestiin box

HIPAA violations galore! All it takes is for one patient to report them and they'd be in BIG trouble.

That's a HIPPA violation? I thought that only covered medical information.

Regardless, way to be unprofessional.
They need to do that in the break room!

You are correct - it does only cover medical info. And only if they identify who the patient is. So, not a HIPAA violation, but still completely unprofessional. I would think strongly about saying something to the doctor

Yes, not a HIPPA violoation but just rude and unprofessional and yes you should let their boss know what his staff is doing.

It's only a HIPAA violation if they're saying the patients name. But it's definitely unprofessional!

I thought you couldn't discuss patients at all - not even if their name wasn't used - in an area where others could hear.

It's a HIPAA violation if the information discussed identifies the patient. So, it's OK to say something about a medical condition or treatment to anyone, anywhere, but not OK if that information could identify the patient.

I have to say i have never heard them discussing medical information, patients by name yes but referring to there lateness , rescheduling, which i get is annoying but you don't do that in front of other patients.

If they are saying patient's names, that could be a HIPAA violation - because they are providing information that that person is a patient, receiving medical treatment - that is enough for a violation

I would mention it to the doctor--it reflects poorly on their practice

Re: Office receptionist

I dont understand why she would even complain - who cares? You have a job because appointments need to be scheduled and rescheduled. If that wasnt the case, you'd be out of work...and how dare she speak of patients in front of patients. I would absolutely say something to the doctor - she deserves to be called out on. So rude.

yes, mentioning the name is a violation. It's no one's business who's being treated there.

I'm imagining "That Derek Jeter, he never shows up on time!"
