Wow for the $5000!!
I don't even think I paid that much 
That's AWESOME though. You can really do some damage with that amount...actually I think it would pay off all of my CC debt!

we get a heafty return each year but my DH and I both claim single zero through out the year.
I know a lot of people think we shouldnt be giving the govt our money interest free BUT we are not going to put the extra few bucks into a savings acct each month so this is like forced savings for us....

I know a lot of people think we shouldnt be giving the govt our money interest free BUT we are not going to put the extra few bucks into a savings acct each month so this is like forced savings for us....
I hear you. If I had the money every month, it would have been a relatively small amount and it would have gone to otehr bills piecemeal. now it's a chunk that will pay off a CC, which I guarantee I'd still be paying off even with the extra $$ in my paycheck every month.

 But if you used that money every month to pay towards your CC bills, you'd be paying less overall (instead of letting the interest build up)?
We try to get as little refund as possible so that we can save the money throughout the year and earn interest on it.

We do the same, and since Dh works on a commission scale that can change, we take out additional each paycheck for him to make sure we don't owe at the end of the year.

We have a mortgage and a child and a lot of medical bills last year and we STILL OWE!!!!!
Apparently we make too much money, have too good of medical coverage, and have too low taxes.
So it's great to be us the rest of the year, it just $ucks at tax time.

That would be true if I paid exactly $x more per month to that CC. I don't think that would actually happen. I have soo many bills.

we used to owe the state also, then a few years ago my DH had an extra $15 each paycheck taken out for the state and now we almost even out each year. we get back a little bit BUT not the total extra that we give them each year...

this is what I do b/c I always owed state (especially when I worked on LI...no ONE got my payroll taxes right!) now I claim 1, plus $10 extra out. I end up with teeny state refund, so I know it's the right amount extra.

I expected over $5k. We bought a house and had a child in the same yr!
Also, DH is NYPD..they take out ALOT so in the end..its a nice return.
