I have said and will say again that I would have no problem with my income tax increasing if it meant that everyone in this country had affordable health insurance and access to health care.
Agreed. I would happily take on a tax increase for the same thing.

Which will cost less in the long run. We ALREADY pay for thise who dont have health care....so it wont change that much.

Whatever this costs, the corporate heads will keep their cushy lives status quo and its the peons who lose their jobs, or benefits go up etc etc.
With all due respect, this is the issue you should be getting up in arms over.
And to your example, if a $63,000 charge a company knows about 2 years in advance is going to 'put them under', chances are they were on their way there anyway - that's a few orders that fall through. To those companies, their accountant should have them sock away the $ now - they have 24mos to do so.
Works out to $2625/month; doesn't sound quite so steep now

Re: Obamacare surprise fee
While obviously I would love for every man, woman, child, young, old to be covered, I have to think of MY family first. Just as YOU will always put YOUR family first. If fees like this keep getting handed down to the employees it's going to be very costly. It's nice to see that $63 won't have an impact on so many of you but there's so many more out there that it will make a huge difference for. That's someone's water bill, that's someone's gas for a week...and when you are alread struggling that's a huge deal. I see where Obamacare can be helpful but I also see where it can be hurtful and with this economy and unemployment status I think the bad will outweigh the good.

I'm sorry but all I have to read is what Leeners said and it is ok with me. Plus, my sister has a severe pre existing condition and needs this.

$63 won't mean anything if god forbid you find yourself without insurance and have to pay thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of hospital bills.

This is the way I look at it. Our taxes are already going to this.
We pay more now for the uninsured than we would to pay for the Affordable Healthcare Act. This is part of the reform that is needed. If people are able to get healthcare they can afford then they won't foreclose on their homes or have to choose between food and medicine for their kids. It affects our economy as a whole. How do you choose between having the life saving surgery or paying your rent? The poverty spiral continues,. And any one of us could find ourselves in that situation.
I will pay what I have to for the betterment of our economy. This is directly related to the economy.

This is true.
And the insurance companies will, in the long term, be just fine. Just like they were when the Portability portion of HIPAA was enacted (they used the same scare tactics back in the 90's when HIPAA was initially passed as well)
Insurance rates will continue to rise. It's a certainty, just like death and taxes. PPACA or no PPACA they're rising.

Re: Obamacare surprise fee
I personally would pay $63 without a problem...my problem is what else are we going to have tacked on besides obamacare fees? will this just replace what we already pay for with uninsured patients or are we just going to continue to pay more and more and more. One of the main focuses of the election was the finger pointing re: wether or not this one or that one would raise taxes for the middle class. Obviously $63 doesn't seem like a scary number for us at all (although i agree with a previous poster that for some that IS alot...it IS a water bill, gas, food shopping or something) I just worry about the usual broken promises of the government...like will we end up forking up the cash and still see a downgrade in quality of healthcare? thats what i worry about. In other words, my faith in government is more the issue...as is my faith is large corporations who as another poster said would keep their pay and raises while sacrificing the low men on the totem pole. I just wonder if the fees will be paid and people will still be screwed with sub par care. only time will tell.
I know someone will correct me so before it happens...I know it's not US who pays up front...but eventually...we do pay.

(before you all judge- it's not the type you can avoid- I have the type that kids get)
you never know where you might be in a year from now- something that doesn't apply to you today- might tomorrow
my Dad should have voted republican but didn't b/c he is so concerned about me being able to have heath ins.

I agree. And this is $63 a year. Not a week or even a month. $5.25 a month if you want to get specific. That isn't a gas bill or groceries, it's nominal in the big picture. I am very sympathetic to those that are struggling but chances are if $5.25 makes such a difference then you should be eligible for other types of assistance.
I work for a not for profit, and I have a feeling we the employees will have to absorb this fee and I am fine with that. At some point we do need to look at the greater good.

Obamacare surprise fee
Leeners - She is beautiful. I am so very sorry for you. I will keep both of you in my thoughts.
Thank you for posting her picture. It's time everyone who complains about ObamaCare starts to understand excactly who will be affected by and protected by ObamaCare. Millions will gain coverage and millions more with pre-existing conditions will be protected. Many of those people may be in their own families. I certainly have some in mine.
My sweet 22 yr old niece is one - she's Type 1 diabetic and has been since she was a toddler. She lost her job and her insurance ran out. She has nothing to help her should she get sick or to help her pay for the life giving insulin supplies she needs to survive, plus her eyes are starting to deteriorate. Her mother is another - she had heart surgery for a genetic condition, surgery for a carotid artery recently and needs another artery operation, plus she needs surgery on her leg veins. Her Cobra is about to end and there is not one plan offering continuing coverage for anyone with pre-exisiting conditions in Florida. She will have to wait six months with no insurance before she can qualify for a state high-risk plan, by which time she could actually die.
I am being treated for breast cancer - who do you think would want me in their plan? We NEED Obamacare.

Re: Obamacare surprise fee
I have pre-existing conditions, and my healthcare costs have risen $$$ every year for decades, well before Obamacare was even brought up. I've gotten less coverage every year, too, even though I pay more than the year before. $5.25 a month is nothing compared to what the typical annual increase in health insurance costs through my company are each year.

Re: Obamacare surprise fee
As evidenced by Leeners post, I think we can all see how insignificant $63 is if it means our fellow Americans get health care. I can't fathom how anyone can think that we should live in a country where people should die in the street rather than the average American pay a few extra bucks, heathens.

Happy to pay the $63 over the thousands I'd have to if I wasn't covered due to my pre-existing conditions!

So it doesn't begin until 2014 and it's $63 whopping dollars per covered employee.
To cover people - not statistics, PEOPLE -with pre-existing conditions.
Oh, the horror
(And the multi-million dollar bill they reference would be for corporations with 15k or more employees, spread over three years. Those are often also the highest earning companies - as in, in the billions of dollars earning category.)
This is the face of pre-existing condition - without this bill, I would have to work through my daughter's terminal illness because we started out on my healthcare
Sorry - this is a non-story to me.
I just found your blog today. God bless you and your family, especially your little girl. Your love and your strength are evident, and God blessed your daugher when he chose you to be her mommy.
