What would happen if all of us teachers decided to just start doing our jobs halfassed? Where would the rest of you be?
Not even halfassed -- but to ONLY work the hours in which we are required to. If I got to my job at 8:20 and left promptly at 3:17.5 --- and NEVER worked through my lunch and preps --- a lot would not get done and there wouldn't be as much sucess in my classroom.

EXACTLY! I've ALREADY been doing work since July for this coming school year and I'm supposed to be on MATERNITY leave. I can't tell you how many afternoons I've spent on the phone with my administrators setting up things for this coming school year.

I think its is unfair to compare jobs/proffesions and say that one is more difficult than the other - all careers have their own unique struggles for instance:
When I worked at a Big NYC firm I was compensated nicely but I worked 80+ hours a week so when you did the math it wasn't much. We ate EVERy meal at the firm. Had to sneak out of work at 11pm for fear that someone would see us leaving. We were given four weeks vacation but God forbid you actually took them. We had blackberries so we could keep up with work on the nights and weekends that we weren't actually working. We would cry in our offices at 3 am because we were still there or because a partner would berate you in the halls. I was 100K in debt from law school and we had to take continuing education courses. But you know what?? I chose it and then I chose to leave it.
My point is we could all compare our woes but the truth is every one has to deal with different crap at their jobs.
For me _ I wouldn't have the patience to put up with all the kids...

Oh boy...glad I wasn't around.
I'm a teacher. Did I go into the profession for the vacation time? That was the ribbon or the cherry, for sure. I went into it to help children, to do my part to change or shape the world. Am I having fun? Absolutely. Is it hard? Hell yeah!!! I work my a$$ off. And I'm sorry to say, but even with my 'vacation' time, I am still doing something for school. Always. I calculated it once. With the hours I put into school, the hours I stay AFTER school and the time in the evening and on the weekends, I was making $13.44 an hour.
$13.44 an hour. Excuse me for being a bit defensive. On top of that, I spent over $4000 on school last year. Only half of that was on extra classes for me. That means about $2000 of my OWN MONEY went towards making school better for my class. I have no idea where the money went. But it got spent.
Do we have perks? Oh yes! Great benefits, great retirement package, great vacation time. I won't complain. I loooove my job. I know I'm making a difference in a kid's life. I KNOW IT!!!
But a lot of people still continue to bash us. Okay, for the parents out there. Do your kids ever just drive you a little up a wall? Imagine 28 of them? Trust me, they are really NO DIFFERENT in school than they are at home. So if you're going out of your mind because your child is off the wall, so is his teacher.
For all the neysayers: How often do you 'pretend' to work? Seriously, eveyone who is at work RIGHTNOW, but are on here...shouldn't you be working? But if you're on here, technically, you're not. So how much work are you REALLY doing?
ANyway, I will defend my profession to the end. I work hard. And while I have loooved my time out of school, I did summer school and tutored. I prepare for the upcoming year. But no matter what I do, nothing prepares me for the new year. The anxiety, the new kids, THE NEW PARENTS  It's very daunting.
But please, don't put us down. And in an essence, the vacations aren't so much for us, they're for the kdis. If we would go crazy without the time, the kids would be OFF THE FRIGGIN WALL!

I admire every single day every teacher gives to their job, it's sooooo demanding...but you did have a lot of consecutive days off so.......

for me, one of the most daunting things about being a teacher is that you are always "on". there is no stepping away or taking a break. heck, I barely get time during the day to pee, much less surf the web.

Ladies, I think we have all made our point...
I know there are good points and bad points to every job. Believe me, I would not want to commute to the city on the train, I would not want some of the pressures that go with corporate jobs, etc....
And teaching does have its perks, days off etc.
but it is stressful and there is a lot that we cant do like pee when we want to, take a longer lunch at a different time, talk on the phone, surf the web, travel when we want to, taking classes that cost $$ just to increase our salary.. and the countless other things...
But I am grateful and thankful for my job, my time off, my perks and my students....

At my job, I am one of many former teachers. And one of the things people who come from teaching say is that it is so great that here you can go to the bathroom whenever you want!

no one can speak about a teacher until they can sit in that classroom and do what we do all day, everyday.......then complain about the time we have off and say that it is not needed............I never have a free moment and am constantly planning and doing----all jobs are stressful, no disagreement there, but teachers def deserve the time they get off-----------I agree 1000 x's with prncssrachel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have MANY friends who worked in the business world , then went back to school for teaching. According to them, Teaching is NOTHING compared to the business world (working in NYC) . Sure it has its tough points, but I highly doubt from their opinions it is more stressful then being in business. Just what I've heard......... Teachers have so much time off, it's not even funny, Per hour, teachers probably make more then someone like me who works 50 hours a week 49 weeks out of the year!!
I have heard the exact OPPOSITE - many times.
I give your "business friends" 15 minutes with my Washington Heights 6th graders and see how much they like it then.

So funny--
So I am sitting in the gyno's office waiting to talk to my doc, and this woman waiting strikes up a conversation with me, saying that it must be hard for our doc, delivering babies, what an awful schedule, etc.
Then she says, you know what is a great job? TEACHING. You only have to work from 8-3 and you get all this time off, what a racket these teachers have, they are all still on summer vacation!!!
So then she looks at me, and asks, "and what do you do, dear?"
Imagine her embarrassment when I said, "I'm one of those TEACHERS!!"
Funny, because I was reading a book at the time on current theories of how children aquire language and learn, (she couldn't see the title). So, I gave her the teacher speech--how it's the hardest job i've ever had. Oh, and BTW I *WAS* in the business world, in computers, and for a while was at a startup no less--we're talking crazy hours--and still teaching is by far the most difficult, physically and mentally-draining and challenging job I've ever had. It is truly, for those 10 months a year, all-encompassing and I constantly think about my kids, how I can help them, how I can do better for them, and make my class more exciting for them. I mentioned that I'm sitting there studying now, on my summer vacation, how I took 5 weeks of courses and went up state to attend a weeklong conference for a total of 6 weeks out of my summer, and now in my free time, here I am, trying to get ideas for the classroom--trying to squeeze it in wherever I can--
It took so much self-restraint not to scream at her!!!
At the end, she said, "it takes a special kind of person to be a teacher"
She's got that right!!
