NYC and math regulations?
My school wants to offer "different" math courses, like Math Art and History of Math. The administration is insisting that these kinds of courses fulfill graduation requirements. I'm hesitant; I don't think those courses fulfill requirements as per NYC. Every school I know offers Algebra, Geometry, Trig, Pre-Calc, etc. to fulfill requirements. (I know it's different on the island, and that districts can use math electives).
Anyone know what the regulations for math graduation requirements are in the city?

R-
I am almost positive you must have 6 credits of legit math
You could certainly offer history of math so that your students have 'a math" their senior yr as opposed to dropping math altogether.
I am trying to find something from the state clearly stating with no luck--I will keep trying.

Re: NYC and math regulations?
Got an answer.
As per NY, students need three years/6 semesters of math. ONE of those years has to be Algebra, Geometry, Trig, etc. But the other two years can be "locally developed" math courses. The loophole is that the new course offerings have to be approved by a committee (usually the Network Leader picks these people). The DOE "strongly suggests" that the kids take NYS courses, but can't/won't do much if a school gets Basket Weaving approved as a math class.
My principal is becoming our Network Leader as of July 1.
Anyone want to register for Intro to Basket Weaving?

Re: NYC and math regulations?
Math Art? History of Math? Some admins are to much.
They should look into offering financial literacy, which is practical and beneficial for the students. My school is looking into this, but with all of the cuts this year, it will probably not be offered.

In the not-so-distant past, the NYC school district could only certify academic math courses (ie: Math A & B) for graduation requirements. Apparently this changed....

if you are going to dumb down math - why not have a math class for life
including balancing a checkbook, everifying your bank statement - percentages off products, coupons - trying to save the most, basic taxes math, pricing a service, creating a house budget based on a salary and expenses -compound interest and savings
a math skills for life with everything relateable to everyday things - at least this would give them skill they need

I have BEGGED for this class for years. Not every student is going to get an advanced diploma so why not give them a class for that will actually help them later in life.
Unfortunately, no one in my dept that is willing to teach it would be allowed to give up Regents classes to do so.
