Nursing and propofol?

Going for an endoscopy next week. Anesthesiologist said not to nurse for 48 hours. That seems excessive but of course I'd rather be safe. Kellymom doesn't say 48 hours.

Anybody have an experience with this?

Nursing and propofol?

Call the infant risk hotline. Most doctors are not knowledgable enough about BFing and drugs.

maybe ask your pediatrician too? When I had to take antibiotics for mastitis, the antibiotic that I took was not safe with nursing. My OB gave me one answer and my pediatrician gave me another

Nursing and propofol?

I asked my friend who's an anesthiologist. She said I could pump and dump a few times but to be conservative they say 24 hours.

I'll research a little more and make some calls.

Nursing and propofol?

The ped and my primary said I couldn't take a specific med and nurse. I called the infant risk hotline and they said the amount of drug passed onto the child was negligible, but it might affect my supply. That was 19 months ago and I'm still BFing. Definitely do your research.

I did a pump and dump for 24 hours.

Also, if it makes you feel better- I had an endoscopy done with propofol without knowing that I was pregnant! I had no idea (no symptoms at the time) and nobody tested me. It freaked me out when I found out, but thankfully DD is healthy.

Re: Nursing and propofol?

It does get in your breast milk.

It won't sedate the kid if they drink it (doesn't work orally, was a big point in the Michael Jackson trial). That's why many people say go ahead & feed.

But after getting a lot of propofol (like you would for endoscopy), at 8 hours, women were found to have propofol in breast milk at 1/10 the concentration of propofol in breast milk when the drug started.

With this data, I'd personally go the conservative route & pump & dump for 24 hours after surgery end.

There is no "actual" number.

Thanks everyone! Yeah I def wouldn't nurse anytime soon after. The minimum I would pump and dump would be 24 hours. I just thought 48 hours seemed excessive. But I'll do whatever is best for my baby.

Re: Nursing and propofol?

Try to find a LC, maybe through the hospital, and ask them. I had surgery when I was nursing, DC was 4 months old. The surgeon and 2 other doctors said to pump and dump for a day, my anesthesiologist and LC said no dumping was necessary, that the anesthesia leaves the system as soon as you wake up. I do not know what type of anesthesia I had, I was under for about 3 hours. I was comfortable with pumping and dumping only once while I was in recovery. I fed DC once I got home.
