I'm sorry you're going through this. I'm not quite sure I understand what you wrote. Did the doctor give you the blood results back yet? The measurements alone are very unreliable which is why they pair it with a blood test.

Re: nuclear translucancy help please

If by needles in the belly you mean an amnio or CVS and you dont want these tests because of risk of a miscarriage, ask them if they can do the Materni-T21 test. Its a blood test that has a very high accuracy to detect genetic disorders such as Downs.

Good luck with everythingChat Icon

THe NT scan is very unreliable.

I skipped it completely. The results IMO mean very little. They are not conclusive and just give you odds.

I had an amnio and IMO its not bad at all. VERY little risk of miscarriage and it goes down based onthe Dr that does them. They have a bad rep because back in the day they were performed without using a sono. They are sono guided now and do not go any near the baby. I loved having hard results not some odds that even if they are good odds you could still be that 1.

I had the CVS test when my NT scan came back indicating that the nuchal thickness was increased. Everything came back fine.

Re: nuclear translucancy help please

I was very wary about doing CVS, I had it scheduled, then cancelled, and had the Maternity - T21 in stead. I figure if that comes back abnormally then I can do further testing (I have twins, so would need to see who had a problem). Maternity- T21 has no risks..so it was a good starting point for me.

first of all, Google is not your friend right now so stop searching on there for answers! Just because the sono may show something does not mean the blood work will result in the same. Please wait for the bllod results to see what they say. if they require further testing, they will call you and tell you this. try to stay positive in the meantime

Definitely wait for the blood results before freaking out or making any other decisions.... your dates can also be off. At the NT scan they told me everything was fine, then the blood work came back and they told me my ratio for downs was 1/13 and they wanted to do the CVS (needle through the abdomen or cervix). When that came back we were negative for down syndrome. The NT scan is very unreliable and honestly I would have probably just passed on it knowing what I know now... for our next baby I will definitely be passing on the NT/CVS and just do an amnio and be done with it.

If you don't want the testing and know for you it won't change any decisions you would make about your pregnancy then I would just decline future testing. But if you think you're going to spend the rest of your pregnancy worrying then it might do you some good to go for the additional testing or ask for the blood work some of the other girls suggested.

Good Luck and really try to stay calm until you get the blood work back.

what was your measurement from the scan (neck thickness)? Mine was 100% outside the "normal" range and I ended up having a healthy baby.

Ugh! The NT scan. My nuchal fold test was good, but after my 2nd bloodwork came back it came back high for the possibility of down 's syndrome. It almost ruined my holidays last year. We saw a genetic counselor to help us understand what it "could " mean. The third bloodwork came back better. We also were not going to do more evasive tests regardless. As I write this I am playing with my almost 4 month old baby who is learning to reach and grab as we speak. She doesn't have any issues other than reflux and a milk protein allergy ( but that's another story). Anyway the NT has so many false positives! Try to keep the faith and not put too much thought into those tests. I know that's easier said than done but I got sick with worry and spoke to SO MANY people who told me stories about their false positives, too.The NT seems to be just a "maybe "or guideline to a "possible issue". I will probably opt out if I get pregnant again.Good luck! Sending prayers.

I had the nuclear translucancy test come back with a soft marker for downs also (thickened nuchal fold, baby's was 6.2 normal is 6 I believe) I WAS A COMPLETE MESS and could not stop crying and had to call out sick from work and everything. I declined the CVS and amnio because I know there are risks involved. I went to Madonna perinatal a day or two after my doctor gave me the result and after speaking to the genetics counselor I demanded that they do another sono. They kept telling me that my insurance would not pay for it, and the test would cost me almost $300 out of pocket, I said I would pay it. A few minutes later they concluded that my insurance would pay for it, cause they had found a potential problem with the baby. They redid the test and the tech said to me she did not understand they had gotten the result they did on the first test, cause everything was measuring perfect. I again could not stop crying and thanking the tech. My doctor confirmed a few days later that everything was perfect. I did have to go see a fetal cardiologist and when I told him why I was referred he kind of just shook his head and implied that they test are infamous for false results. If I had to do it all over again, I would have probably opted out of doing the test. Good luck and I am sure that everything will be fine.
