Re: Not to many Long Island Schols make the list

I scanned the top 200- and it seemed like there were at least 10 LI schools and a bunch of westchester schools

I find it interesting that so many people say don't move to south florida the schools are not to good- but there are a few that made the top 100 and more that made the top 200

but it says
"Public schools are ranked according to a ratio devised by Jay Mathews: the number of Advanced Placement, Intl. Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2006 divided by the number of graduating seniors. All of the schools on the list have an index of at least 1.000; they are in the top 5 percent of public schools measured this way."

1,200 schools in 50 states would be only 24 schools per state (if it were distributed evenly). Having 10 or so schools in the top 1,200 nationwide seems pretty good to me.

Re: Not to many Long Island Schols make the list

That looks like a great number of LI schools. They are alongside schools that are for specific subjects or may require tests for admission. If I did my search correctly, there were 152 schools in the state of NY on there. That's more than 10 % of a list that covers all 50 states.

I wonder about that accuracy of this list - or how they are comparing this, and why some school districts are not on it. Wantagh isn't listed, but Baldwin is 920? Chat Icon

The way they d their ranking some schools are not eligible. If you notice, Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, Hunter, Townsend Harris, etc are not on the list, when clearly they should be. So the list is not really complete and probably leaves out a lot of "top" high schools becuase the students scored too high on the SAT and ACT and they are on the "elite" list.
Also I know some of these lists exclude schools that do not rank their classes, etc etc. It's not really an exhaustive list. Look at their criteria. They're just going by how many students take AP classes.

And BTW I think the representation in LI is great. There are a LOT of schools on the list!
