Re: WARNING - FP rock n play could lead to flattening of baby's head!!
Posted by MamaLeen
Honestly, I think the title of this thread is a bit irresponsible and dramatic. New moms have enough to worry about. Hopefully ALL moms would realize that they should reposition their baby often as to not cause a flat head.
sorry...i didn't mean to be irresponsible or dramatic. i guess i don't have much experience with newborns and the reviews i read frightened me.
i didn't know about this flat head situation. so i was just posting what i thought was a warning to be helpful, not to be criticized. now i remember why i stopped posting on LIW. oh well, sorry for the trouble!
hopefully if anything, this thread will at least be helpful to those who, like me, were unaware of how easily flat head can happen, and will now know about the need for repositioning of baby's head.

Re: not meant to be irresponsible or dramatic...
Ok, I apologize if I was harsh in responding to your original post. I do think that changing this thread title is very dramatic as well, lol. Oh well, I guess that is your style.
I just think before your title something with WARNING you should know all of the facts.
I do hope this makes more people aware of the fact that any product can cause a flat head on a newborn if they are left in it for too long.

Re: not meant to be irresponsible or dramatic...
drama is far from my style, but you weren't the only one who seemed to be implying that it was a bad/stupid post. i was a bit hurt that several posters seemed to think i was being a trouble maker when my intention was only to warn people about something that sounded really scary to me. i wanted to make a new title in hopes that people who already read it would read it again, so i borrowed from your post b/c it struck me the most. i was trying to defend myself, but maybe it was dramatic; i guess i sometimes care way too much about how i'm perceived on internet forums.
this is getting ridiculous. i'm sorry i ever wrote anything at all, but at this point i feel like it might seem even more dramatic if i delete the whole thing. so hopefully it'll just be shuffled down the list of posts.

I'm sure there are people who will read this and didn't know about flat spots - so the thread was good! Maybe just a bit too specific.

Re: not meant to be irresponsible or dramatic...
I agree. I actually learned a lot about flat head and tummy time from this post that I was unaware of so I think while it may have been too specific to a product (Which I plan to use for napping), I think it was very informative as well.

I learned some things just from reading this thread and you brought up excellent points. it didn't seem like you were trying to start trouble...it seemed like you were trying to be helpful. thanks!

Don't feel bad! I think it's understandable when new moms don't know things like this - I was a new mom too and had no idea about flatness etc until my DS developed it.
I posted what I did to hopefully provide more info to you and any other mom to be that didn't know about it.

Don't feel bad. I think you did a good thing. You read the reviews for a popular product and they were scary. I can't believe anyone is criticizing you. What they should be doing is takin the advice as they see fit and moving along. The post you made was for a specific product because it was the product you see alot on here and the product you read reviews for. You are not responsible to critique every product and whether or not it causes flat heads.
Thank you for the warning.

Re: not meant to be irresponsible or dramatic...
My DD2 slept in it for the first two months or so and her head is perfectly fine. (so is her neck) It was really nice to be able to rock her back to sleep if she woke up. My DS slept in the swing for the first 5.5 months of his life and had no head or neck problems either.

Re: not meant to be irresponsible or dramatic...
I have to admit at first this post scared me because I did buy the rocker with the intention of using it for her to sleep in at least part of the time. After i felt the back part of the seat it is very hard. I added a blanket to cushion it and I think it should be fine. Even if you put your baby right into the crib you have to change their head positions to avoid flat head. I plan on doing this no matter what we use for her to sleep or nap in. I do think adding a blanket or cushion to the back of the rock and play would be helpful. I might get some thin foam to put in there.

Re: not meant to be irresponsible or dramatic...
i will be a first time mom too and i bought the rock and play sleeper with the intention of using it for sleeping. I did not realize how easily it is for babies to develope flat head- but thats what these boards are for more - informational, I am thankful for all the posts i have learned so much. i think now i am going to take previous posters advice and use a blanket behind the babies head when i put them in it.

Re: not meant to be irresponsible or dramatic...
I hate to say this, but putting a blanket behind the baby's head is actually NOT recommended by the AAP.
Any soft surface under the baby increases their chance for SIDS. That's why crib mattresses are so firm (the firmer the better).
I would not put a blanket under the baby's head. I did use the noggin nest (pillow with a cut out in the middle) with DS, but that didn't prevent flatness for him anyway.

Re: not meant to be irresponsible or dramatic...
Dont be upset but there is not one thing that causes a flat head. My ped is very adament about tummy time because a baby laying down in one spot for a long amount of time can cause this no matter where the baby sleeps or lays.

This is true...but if I remember the rock and play sleeper correctly - I think what you ladies can do is put a blanket or soft foam piece like someone suggested in between the material of the seat and the seat frame...so not directly under babies head - under the seat material if that makes any sense. You may need something to keep it in place but I'm sure you could find something to work. Great idea!

Re: not meant to be irresponsible or dramatic...
I had the baby sleep in this for 4 months and he did not get a flat head. Also had no issue transitioning to the crib and sleeping an a flat surface either.
I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this product.
