Re: North Babylon
I grew up there. The town is a bit odd. It has some very nice areas and some very bad areas. Overall it tends to run lower middle class. The school district has always been an issue, even 20+ years ago when I went there. That being said I have many friends that stayed in the area and have kids that go to the district. HTH

Re: North Babylon
I grew up in North Babylon, my parents still live there.
I graduated in 2000 so as far as school district goes, I can't really comment on how it is currently. As a previous poster said, there are very nice areas and not so good areas. I graduated with kids that went to Yale & MIT and others who dropped out...it was VERY mixed.
IMO, the town has been declining over time. It's not really considered desirable anymore, but thats what makes it more affordable...
Like I said, my parents still live there. They dont love it like they used to, but they're not going to move until they're ready to retire. They live in a decent area, no crime, break in's. etc.
I would just say if you're looking to buy there, just be aware. Quite honestly, you can tell which areas are nicer than others...but its also a matter of opinion. If you want specifics about an area in particular, feel free to FM.
Good luck!

Re: North Babylon
DH grew up there - him and 2 of his other siblings went to private schools bc the schools werent good. One of his siblings did go there but he was the oldest and that was before the schools were bad. He said they had metal detectors and their own security - not sure if that changed. We're selling our home in babylon village and a lot of people looking here are people with families wanting to get out of NB because of the schools.

We live there and love it! I think it depends on what section you are in, but our section is very quite and safe. We've lived there for a little over 2 years and have never had any complaints. Our neighbors are wonderful and the location is close to everything. I don't know anything about the schools because we don't have any kids yet and I didn't grow up there. I remeber when we were looking at buying the house the schools were similar in Deer Park, West Babylon and Lindenhurst. Not the best, but not the worst. Feel free to FM me if you have specific questions. Happy to help!

DH & all of his friends grew up in N. Babylon and wen tot school there. They had no complaints about the school district. It's not the best district, but it's not as bad as people on here make it out to be. Currently I live in W. Babylon, but am in N. Babylon school district (which was a preference when we bought this house). Our neighborhood is very nice, but there are parts of the town that are run down (like you'll find in any town). If you have any questions specifically, feel free to FM me -- like I said, DH grew up here so he's very familiar with all areas!

Re: North Babylon
I grew up in NB. As far as the schools - I honestly think it's an average school district. Not great - not terrible.
Most neighborhoods are still in good condition but there are some questionable ones.
My parents live south of sunrise and it's a really nice area. I would buy a house in that area in a second if I could. I love the street that they live on. (Foster Blvd)

I have a friend who lives in N.Babylon and desperately wants to move. She says her schools are terrible. this. My dh grew up there and always commented on how bad the school district was. IMO I would never move there. There are very scetchy areas. You really have to be careful.

Re: North Babylon
My dh went to north babylon schools and he never says anything negative. I went to babylon high school so my preference would be babylon or west babylon school districts but north babylon is not a deal breaker. There are sketchy areas in almost every neighborhood. Just do your best to distance yourself from those areas.

Re: North Babylon
A family member works in the district and says it has gone down hill exponentially. I have family that lives there and they are happy and have a really nice neighborhood but they don't have kids in the schools either.

Re: North Babylon
For those of you that are saying the schools are bad-can you explain further? Just saying something is bad is not as helpful as explaining why it's bad, kwim?
The reason I ask is bc I have family that live in NB and really like it--they have good athletic & music programs as well as advanced classes, and many clubs, etc. (all good to make a well-rounded kid)
It is a middle class community where people stay and raise their children, generation after generation
I don't think NB is much different than other middle class communities on the island
It is very convenient to all parkways, stores, etc. I think it is a great location.

Re: North Babylon
My grandparents lived in "sunset city" for over 40 years, my dad also had a house in that area for many years. I can't say anything about the schools but my grandparents' neighborhood was cute and quiet and very family friendly. It never felt sketchy or unsafe to me and I spent a lot of time there.

Re: North Babylon
I grew up in NB and my mother still lives there. Like others said, the school district when I went (late 90s) was not the best but not the worst by far. Its a diverse town/school district, big into school sports, close to parkways/LIE and babylon village. As far as "sketchy" parts of the town I think that its no more than any other comparable neighboring town (lindenhurst, west bag, etc)
