Nice hotel near Hershey

The other thread about trips for the coming year got me thinking. Might want to do Hershey this year.
Hershey Hotel is a bit too pricey in summer.
I see very mixed reviews on Hershey Lodge. A lot say it's overpriced and not great.
Where do you stay near Hershey?

Nice hotel near Hershey

We just stayed at the Lodge for the Candylane event. We liked it, loved that we can just take the bus to the park, and tons of restaurants inside, family activities, free chocolate at check in, huge discounts on tickets. BUT, it's huge, like a maze, and the rooms are nice, but have a musty type smell. I had to wash many of our clothes twice, and our suitcases smelled. I've read that same complaint from several, so I think it's just because it's old. I also didn't like that we had to walk outside to get to the waterpark (in 20 degree weather).

You could rent someones timeshare at the Suites at Hershey, or try to book a cash reservation. It's nice, 2 bed/2bath, you can see the park from the window. Try Redweek, VRBO, etc. and even Facebook Marketplace. Indoor/outdoor pools. We like it there.

There really aren't any "nicer" full service hotels around there. Mostly Marriott, Hampton Inn, etc. We have done the Residence Inn, which was okay. We stay there free on points. There are several on Chocolate Avenue that get good reviews. I know a few people who like the Mainstay Suites in Grantville (like 10 minutes away), and they have an indoor waterslide.

We stayed at the SpringHill Suites. It was very convenient and nice (but, like Bargain said - it's not a "nicer" hotel).

The perks for staying at the Hotel Hershey and Hershey Lodge are you can get into the park an hour earlier at open and an hour earlier for preview. They also have transportation.

The hotel we stayed at was closer to the entrance though than the other two.

Re: Nice hotel near Hershey

Yes I am spoiled by Eden and like the "resort" feel of it. Nothing around Hershey really has that- other than the Hotel Hershey. And maybe the Lodge I guess but musty... ugh.... I can't handle that. Not for the prices they charge.

Thanks for the info though, maybe I will look into renting in the Suites.

I'm having the same problem. They are just so expensive for a weekend in the summer and based on the reviews the lodge doesn't sound like it'all meet my hotel cleanliness standards. These places skeeve me as it is and I had a horrible bed bug experience at a resort in Florida so now I am extra skeeved. I have no idea what to do!

I'm a teacher and in May we did our senior trip there.

This hotel was SUCH a bargain. It was clean and they have a little area for basketball and yes, a waterslide which my students loved.

I am thinking the best bet is to just go with a clean, newish standard hotel like some of the ones mentioned in this thread. They won't have all the fun ammenities and outdoor pool etc, but at least I can handle a Marriott or whatever.
I even considered staying at Eden and just travelling to Hershey park but that's a hike.

We stayed in Lancaster near DW and we ended up doing DW then Hershey, then DW again. I didn't think the drive was too bad. We never really do anything at the hotel other than sleep and eat breakfast so I'd also go with a newish hotel near Hershey, unless you're going to DW too. I definitely stayed in a full service hotel close to Hershey, but it was around 15 years ago so I can't recall where it was....

Re: Nice hotel near Hershey

We actually stayed at the Hershey Lodge, and LOVED it. I would like to know what people didnt like about it?
They have a small water (park....) area for the kids, not big, but kept them entertained.
The food was decent, and there is a great arcade.

From the reviews on Trip Advisor and the pictures travelers posted, the rooms were a bit beat up and outdated, and as a BargainMama mentioned here, musty.
They also complained about very bad customer service, not getting into their rooms until 7 pm, mismanagement, etc
I understand the customer service thing is subjective and could be just a busy time or whatever but I can't deal with a smelly, musty or run down room- especially since it's not cheap.
So I'm just torn

It seems like half of our town went there last year (at different times) and all had great experiences as well.

Someone did say it was really big but, everyone had fun.

We weren't at the hotel that much.

Our room was not worn down at all, it was actually a really nice, but the musty smell just killed me. Especially when we paid $800 for two nights. Our room was on a higher floor, so it was not like it was a flooded room. Because I'm pretty sure some of the rooms have flooded in the past. But maybe the smell permeates from the first floor I have no idea. It was worse when the heat was on so maybe it's the heating system. We stayed in the Fifth Avenue section, and the hotel was completely sold out the weekend we went. We went vets weekend, and it was freezing that weekend! The only reason I chose to stay there versus staying at another property which I could have stayed at for free, was because they had the indoor water park. I was really annoyed that we had to walk outside though

But, I have to say, if I found a cheaper rate in the summer, I would probably stay there, only because the convenience to the park was so nice. It was like at Disney where you park your car and don't have to use it again. I would just know not to bring my suitcases and pack duffle bags because those are easier to wash LOL

This is what i think we wl doo as well. I too have thought about staying at Eden but it is a little far. I wouldn't mind it but DH probably wouldn't do it. I may try to convince him.

sorry your room smelled. When we checked in, we asked to stay in same building as pool. It was the Peanut Butter cup building.

This is why we settled on DW again last summer. My Dd was old enough for Hershey but the whole hotel situation was just too frustrating. I love the feel of Eden. Its nice to be able to spend a half day at the pool...love the resort feel.
If Best Western opened a similar resort closer to Hershey they would clean up!!

You did luck out, if anyone goes, they should request the wing you stayed in!

If you look on Trip Advisor and type "musty" in, there are 15 pages of reviews of musty rooms.

See I can't risk it. Not for that kind of money.
It's a shame too. You would think they would have a way to deodorize those rooms or find the source of it.
I will have to figure out another option

The Suites is on ebay but you probably don't want to stay a week! But, you could email the seller and see if they will do a shorter stay!
