Newborns Crying

My DD is 3 weeks old and still cries when DH holds her.

DH is very sensitive and is starting to feel that DD does not like him right now. It hurts my heart so bad. He tries his hardest to console her sometimes when she is crying. Sometimes she stops and falls asleep in his arms. Other times, he just hands her back to me in defeatChat Icon I encourage him to keep trying and explained that she is still very young and will adjust to you in time. I tell DH all the time that DD loves him and I let him hear me telling DD all the time how much Daddy loves her and wants the best for her.

I am wondering if any of you experience this and when did your DC begin to calm down around Daddy?

Re: Newborns Crying

Hi!

My six week old son seems to be fussiest in the evening and night which is when DH is home from work! So it seems that DS is always crying when DH is holding him. Plus, since I'm breastfeeding, most of the time DH gets to hold DS is when he is hungry, crying and waiting for me to finish eating or run to the bathroom, etc. before feeding him. My son is my first child, but my DH has two other sons. They are now 7 and 10. They were very fussy babies. It makes me feel good, because I seem to need reassurance, when DH tells me that DS isn't a very fussy baby at all. Then I worry that he's going to start to feel he IS indeed a fussy baby and then I'll feel bad, like my baby isn't a "good" baby and how am I going to handle this fussy baby! I'm having a lot of anxiety and worry issues sine the birth... Actually, I've always been t.his way!

Another thing is that I'm on maternity leave so I'm with DS all day. I'm learning what positions he likes and doesn't like and I avoid putting him in a position I know he doesn't like. DH props him in his Boppy pillow and I KNOW DS doesn't like this. DS cries and I feel like saying, don't put him in there, he doesn't like it, but I don't want it to seem like I'm telling DH what to do or make him feel like he doesn't know him. Sometimes DS just likes to be held and walked around with. My DH will hold him, but sit on the couch and I know DS wants to walk. Plus I don't even know if its good that I cater to his wants this way...

My DH is very good at determining what kind of cry ANY baby is crying. It's funny, our son or anybody else's kid will cry and right away, he knows, he's hungry, tired, gas, etc.

Good luck!

Re: Newborns Crying

This happened with my dd. We tricked her. I know this is going to sound weird but I was bfing so I would take off my bra and hang it on my Dh shoulder. When he picked up my dd she would smell my smell and calm down while dh held her. As she got older she just adjusted to him and his smell.

Re: Newborns Crying

Honestly, at 3 weeks, babies don't really have "likes" or "dislikes" per se. You are with the baby more, and feed the baby, so the baby likes you. It's just a stage, and it's nothing personal. Both DC heavily favored DW for the first year, and I fully expected that, and wanted that, almost. The parent with the most hold-time *should* be the preferred parent. DS is 4 now, and he tends towards me more, since I am the "fun" parent. DD is 12 months, and she has opened up to me a lot in the last few months.

Re: Newborns Crying

My DD did that until she was a year old.. now she is Daddys girl, doesn't do anything without him and always wants Daddy when she gets hurt..... My DH was upset in the beginning too, he was thought she just didn't like him.. they just want Mommy, it's something they grow out ofChat Icon

OMG - that is sooo funny!

I noticed that I would play and play with Cailen, and he will smile and laugh. Then, after a while, I would give him to DH, and by then, Cailen was done and wanted some downtime, so he would start to fidget and cry. So, when I'm playing with him, once he gets the smile/giggle going, I will give him immediately to DH so he can play and interact with him when he's in a good mood and develop that bond.

Now, Cailen looooves his daddy time - he equates him with fun and play. Now I'm the just the lady that feeds him! Chat Icon

Thank you to all that responded. I am sure it is a phase. DH is just so sensitive, it hurts me when I look at his face when DD cries as he is doing everything under the sun to console her. I do understand that I am her primary parent because I am home with her all day and provide her every need and I also know that the evening is the fussy time...so we pray that she will get better in time. I know there will come a day when she will be daddy's favorite little girl!

Thank youChat Icon

Re: Newborns Crying

try some skin on skin contact.....DH would lay in bed with his shirt off and DD would sleep on his chest....

that was his FAVORITE time, until she got big enough to wrestle with!
