Newborn bottle feeding question

My 6 day old baby was downing close to 2 oz when we left the hospital 2 days ago. Now, one feeding reached 2 oz., but typically her feedings are between a half ounce and an ounce. MD wants her eating every 3-4 hrs, and sometimes she can go that, sometimes she needs food more often. It's like she's writhing in pain so I don't want to wait til the 3 hr mark. I already tried upping the nipple to the 1mos size, thinking she couldn't get enough food. But I'm not sure it's that. Do I just feed her less more often? Do I switch bottles? Help!!!!

ETA: I used the nursettes in the hospital, and Avent Naturals here at home

Re: Newborn bottle feeding question

I never understood the pediatrician's mentality. When they're feeding from the breast you don't know how much they're taking so why is it limited with bottle feeding? Maybe I'm missing something but when my baby was screaming to eat I fed him no matter when the last feeding was.

Newborn bottle feeding question

I would feed on demand and use a slow flow nipple. Your baby could be going through a growth spurt

Re: Newborn bottle feeding question

I would keep track of the total # of ounces in a day for now and feed on demand, and see how things go. It'll be helpful information when you talk to your pediatrician next.

My pediatrician says feed as needed, but don't let him go more than 3-4 hours between feedings. If he's sleeping I have to wake him up.

Maybe that's what your ped meant too?

Re: Newborn bottle feeding question

I fed dd every two hours and bf so honestly didnt know how much she was getting. I think part of it is they comfort themselves also with the nipple. I didnt space to three hrs till she was 4mo. But she ate small amounts every 2hrs. If lo is hungry i would feed her IMO.

Re: Newborn bottle feeding question

Our ped said to feed newborns on demand so that worked for us.

My dd is 3 weeks old and we went through the exact same for a day or 2 when we brought her home. I did the same exact thing (switching the nipples, but it's wasn't that) she was having trouble adjusting from the nursettes to the avent naturals/powder formula. If I felt she was not getting enough to eat I would swiitch back to the nursettes just to make sure. Switched off between the 2 for about a day or 2 until she got use to the new bottles. Re: Newborn bottle feeding question

I always feed on demand. The baby didn't read the books your doctor read! Their bellies are tiny and to get the amount of calories they need, they may need to eat more frequently. Sometimes DD went 2 hours and sometimes 4 hours.

Newborn bottle feeding question

At that age I was more concern with oz per day rather than a certain amount per feeding and on a certain schedule.

Try to go with the flow of the baby more. No one baby will fit into a certain scheulde of formula at a certain time. You will learn the babies cues and jsut go with it.

This is exactly what I was told as well. IMO every baby is different and some may need to eat every 2 hours, some may want to eat every 3 hours. I listened to my LO's cues.

I would feed on demand also. My DS is 4 months and still rarely goes 4 hours between feeding except at night. Also make sure you are burping her well. It could be the reason she stops eating.
