New to TTC : Folic Acid Question
We are thinking about TTC this summer. Am I supposed to be taking Folic Acid before I get pregnant? What else should I be doing to get ready? Thanks

My MD said to take it for 3 months prior to TTC and continue throughout pregnancy.

Re: New to TTC : Folic Acid Question
Folic Acid should be taken way before you TTC and a multivitamin

Re: New to TTC : Folic Acid Question
My doctor said to take a multivitamin with 400 mcg of folic acid as soon as I started talking about going off the pill.
I think some girls' doctors said to take more folic acid, but my doctor said a regular over the counter multi was fine, and then to take a rx prenatal once we got a bfp.

Re: New to TTC : Folic Acid Question
My OB/GYN suggested to start taking Folic Acid over the counter along with Calcium Citrate--1pill 1 x a day. I started taking a prescription for pre-natal, but now I do over the counter. They suggested to start all of this right after I went off BC and even before TTC. They say the vities help, and I notice a big diff in my hair/skin/nails/attitude. I feel more energetic and awake also. Hope this helps

Re: New to TTC : Folic Acid Question
You will want to start some prenatal vitamins and I would recommend reading the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. Also, spending time on this board will give you a lot of information about other things people are trying. I also recommend using Ovulation Predition Kits (OPK's) in order to time BD precisely.

You are right. My doctor told me to take more. My prenatal has 1000 mcg of folic acid in it.

Re: New to TTC : Folic Acid Question
You should go to your OB for an exam and talk about it. They will go over your family history and advise you if you have any risk factors that would justify genetic testing. They will also assess what type of vitamins you need, it can vary.
I also had to take above the usual level of folic acid because of family history.

Re: New to TTC : Folic Acid Question
I take the Target brand Prenatals, they have 800mcg of Folic Acid. My OB/GYN said that is perfect.
