Nik I have the same flooring in our Family Room, that both you & Jess have. We have scratches too, but my mom's dog does go in & out of that room to do to the backyard some times. Little bugger! But floors are floors and our hardwoods upstairs are scratched too in the three years we have had them.
And I also have a Jute/Cotton rug in the Family Room. It sheds all over the place and I've had it for almost a year now. So it causes dust on the floor more I think. I have a pad under it too. Now I will have to look under the rug & pad and see what it looks like.
Exactly! Floors are floors....At first I was bummed out about it but then I realized that everyone I know that has hardwood has scratches too. I said to DH, your parents, your sister, my aunt, they all have wood floors and they are scratched, discolored and worn but do we EVER notice? Nope! They have beautiful houses, nice decor, and my eyes never go down to their flooring to inspect it for wear and tear. It is what it is and I am not going to tip toe around my house to avoid things getting worn. When you are "living" things can get ruined, our houses aren't staged, they are lived in - so if my table gets a scratch, my dishes chip, I get a scuff on the wall, oh well - sh!t happens. That's my attitude at least...and I know it HAS to be my attitude when we have kids or else I'll be a very depressed woman!
Hopefully your flooring is okay under your rug though...at this point I'm like whatever about it - it's under the rug, there will always be a rug there so I'm not going to worry about it. I think the floor scratched in my living room where I have my shag rug too, I didn't use a rug pad there b/c I didn't think I needed one.
Kim, I think you are right about the Pergo - my parents had it in Staten Island and we had 3 dogs - no surface scratching at all. I mean, not one scratch - but it was really hard to keep clean with the footprints so that is why we went with something else - plus we liked the high shine and scratching didn't seem to be much of a problem when I read reviews for my flooring.
Ironically when DH and I had our apartment we put in the cheapest laminate we could find at HD b/c we couldn't live with ALL carpet, in a basement, with a dog. It was less than $1 per sq foot and it never scratched as far as I know. But it looked and sounded like a cheaper laminate - but that floor held up great TONS of wear and tear.
