Nervous about my amnio...

It's not just the fact that they'll be coming at me with a huge freakin' needle...it's the fact that there's a lot of baby in there and not as much room for error.

I just wish I didn't have to do this, but if that pain comes back full-force, at least I'll be able to go in and deliver so I can start making plans for my back surgery.

I'm so nervous about it. Chat Icon

Re: Nervous about my amnio...

totally understandable and you have every right to be nervous
but just for reassuarance, it is actually considered "safer" to do it at this point in the pregnancy than earlier

this is because the risk in doing it earlier is the possibility of leaking amniotic fluid
at this point in your pregnancy, the "worst" that would happen is early labor

hope that eases your mind somewhat
but i totally understand

Re: Nervous about my amnio...

I had an amnio at the end. It was almost painless. The doctor will be watching everything on a sonogram. If they cannot find a pocket of fluid in an area that looks safe to go into, they will not continue. My friend had that happen. I don't think that's common but she was not at risk b/c they just didn't go any further.

Re: Nervous about my amnio...

I am going on Monday morning.

I hate any kind of procedure like this, and I guess I sort of feel that at 36 1/2 weeks it's unnecessary--I feel like my OB is doing it just because she needs to cover her a**.

No--the Dr. didn't feel it was necessary since I am so close to full term. We've also seen her "breathing" in utero on the sonogram, so I think they're just doing the amnio to be sure.

i am curious how you would feel if you delivered this baby at 36 1/2 weeks and the baby's lungs were not fully developed - and all because your OB did not feel the need to "cover her azz."

Do you have to get an amnio? It just seems so late in the pregnancy.

I guess you wouldn't be getting it if you didn't have to. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Unfortunately, it's the only way my OB will deliver before 39 weeks. I REALLY want to hold out until 12/12, but I had an AWFUL return of my back pain last weekend, so bad that when I stood up out of bed, it felt as though my leg was being crushed under an 18-wheeler and I wasn't able to sit or lay down for the entire weekend. My BP went through the roof and I went back on my 6 painkillers a day to try and cope.

I'm having the amnio so that if it should happen again, I can just go in and deliver. Right now the pain is still awful, but at least it is bearable for now.

Re: Nervous about my amnio...

I had an amnio but obviously not for the same reasons you did. Abby was rather active during the procedure, however, I was not worried. Think about this...your baby is bigger and though she is still moving around, she has less room to move around and DOES move less. She is not really "swimming" around as much but getting ready to come out. It may actually be easier for them to locate a safer place for the needle.

Having had a child in the NICU(at full term being born ONE day before her due date), I assure you this is NOT a position you or your OB would ever choose to be in just to cover one's azz. It is perhaps one of the most TRULY pathetic and saddening sights a doctor and a parent has to see. This is coming from first hand experience. Also, if he DIDN'T offer you the test and G-d forbid her lungs WEREN'T ready, both of you could be faced with even harder choices in terms of treatment. Taking care of things BEFORE hand is much better than the any number of possibilities afterwards.

I hope that your daughter is strong and healthy and that your procedure goes smoothly. I hope that having an amnio and delivering early will be best for both of you. You want your pain alleviated so you can enjoy the first moments of her life with your DH as a family. It is VERY hard to do when you are in physical pain.

Do not eat prior to the amnio. Baby is more active after you eat.
