My friends father has lived in Chapel Hill for years. Have you checked out that area? It is a larger town because of the University, so I am sure they are very tolerant. I do not know about the school system though..never asked.

Re: Need some help with areas of NC PLEASE....

I've been in Charlotte for 1.5 years now and I will NEVER move back to NY again. I just couldnt imagine having my old commute back or my old rent payments again. DH and I have a beautiful 5 bedroom (4 bedroom+ bonus roome) house and we can still afford to live and enjoy life outside of a mortgage payment.

Please FM with questions, it's been a great experience that I was sooo scared to try!

I've heard a lot of good things about Cary, outside of Raleigh.

I've been on Realtor.com and the houses in Cary seem really big, new and beautiful. There are gated subdivisions too and the Cary school district seems to be very good.

Re: Need some help with areas of NC PLEASE....

I live in Nc and i love it here. We are going buy a house here.We came for the cost of living. We live in Concord area. Concord Harrisburg Charlotte mattews are nice areas to live in. The only thing you have to worry about is the school with meckenburg area they are not good schools. Cabarrus county are good school areas and the union something are good schools to.
But i been here for a month and love it here.
IT was the best thing we did.

Wow, so many of you live in NC! Chat Icon

I know nothing about the place...we were considering it though. I like what I hear about Asheville and Charlotte.

Good luck Denise...I have to say, your 2 reasons (stress, finances) were ours. And we LOVE living in the South!

We should have a Southern GTG...I'm not that far away! Chat Icon

Good luck sweetie! Chat Icon I'll pray for clarity for you...it's a really hard decision! Chat Icon

Re: Need some help with areas of NC PLEASE....

Two of our closest friends moved down last year. Both had houses built which is more expensive, but both transferred within their jobs from up here. That's the ideal way to do it.
One couple bought in Concord, he transferred with BankAmerica.
The other couple bought in Tega Cay, they both work for a marble company with an office in Charlotte.
They both love it down there, but I don't really have any specifics.
Good luck to you!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!!!!! We actually decided to move hear the end of last year...my DH just had it with NY and his job was in talks of needing someone to go down and run their two offices ..so DH volunteered himself. We have no family or friends down here...we are the first ones to move down! They only friends we have for now are our next door neighbors who are so nice!! and a friend from NY who is staying with us till her can move into a condo

Thank you, Everyone!Chat Icon We've been compiling info for our trip next month. I hope we like it, but I'm also half hoping we don't (if that makes sense at all- I'm just sad about leaving NY).

Re: Need some help with areas of NC PLEASE....

DH and I moved to Raleigh 7 months ago and LOVE it. We recently bought an incredible house in North Raleigh for half of what we would have paid for it in NY. DH gave up his 1 1/2 hour train commute into NYC for a brand new car (monthly payments on the car are cheaper than his LIRR monthly pass was) and an 8 mile commute. I work in the Reasearch Triangle Park and commute about 15 miles with no traffic. It is awesome. We have never for a minute regretted our decision. We are so happy here and our quality of life has improved more than we ever thought it would.

I have so much to say about this place. I also have an INCREDIBLE realtor here who works with a lot of NY transplants. FM me if you would like her info or if I can help answer any other questions for you Chat Icon

The only thing is that you don't need as much $$ because everything is cheaper. I would do a cost of living comparison.
