Need some advice re planning of baptism
I figured I would ask you ladies who have BTDT. Is it crazy to have a winter baptism (mid February) which would be about 2 weeks before SIL is due? What would you do? thanks

Re: Need some advice re planning of baptism
We waited 4mos and did it at a restaurant in January.
I think you should see how you feel after the baby is here (dont set a date before hand).

Re: Need some advice re planning of baptism
I would wait until your baby is 3 or 4 months. At 4 months, your SIL could definitely be there, and the worst of winter should be past.
I am not very religious though, so maybe not the best person to ask.

The problem with that is that when my child is 3 or 4 mths old, their baby would not have it's shots yet and I don't see them getting a babysitter. So if I want them to be there, I have to wait for their child to have shots to ensure they could come with their child. At that point, my child is now 5 mths old and I do not want to wait that long at all. That's why I am so torn.

Re: Need some advice re planning of baptism
I woulld ask her what she thinks, not sure what kind of relationship you have with her, but it would show her that you are considering her, which is always a good thing between SILs....
But really it would probably be better to have it right before she is due, and not after, because then it could be months before your new neice/nephew has their immunizations, and who knows if they'll want to leave a newborn with a babysitter. Theres no reason why if she lives local and she's due around the time you have the party, she cant attend a party for a couple of hours!

Re: Need some advice re planning of baptism
Regardless of your SIL and baby I would wait 3-4 months for your own DC's baptism. Dont book anything untill you see how you feel after having the baby. The first few months are a little rough, well they were for me at least. The best you can do is invite the SIL and baby, if they go they go. If not, I am sure it wont be the first thing they miss. Once the kiddies come into the picture plans/family gatherings arent always so easy to make.

Re: Need some advice re planning of baptism
You can baptize your baby whenever you want. What I mean is, we had DS#1 baptized when he was 5 months old. DS#2 when he was 8 months old, and DD when she was 10 months old.
I have been to baptisms for babies that are as young as 6 weeks old. Why do you have to wait for shots?
Edited to add: Congratulations btw!

Re: Need some advice re planning of baptism
You really can't control what's going on with your SIL. You could plan perfectly, and she could deliver a month early. With that in mind, I would pick the time frame YOU want and let everything else work itself out. If SIL can't come, that's fine-I am sure she is not expecting you to plan everything around her. I would try to refrain from planning around unknowns 'cause you will be going in circles. Just keep it simple and do what works best for you.

Thank you. I thnk you make some great points. I am trying to figure it out but you are right, there are negatives no matter which way I plan to do it.
So I will probably have to just do what I want and whatever happens happens.

I automatically assume that b/c the baby will be among a crowd (family party afterwards) that shots are a must.
Thanks for the congrats!

Re: Need some advice re planning of baptism
I had a VERY similar situation. I realized that I had to do what was right for MY family (meaning my DS, DH, and me). We ended up having DS baptized on Father's Day, which I knew would mean there would be some friends who could not come. I went into it knowing that, but it was the only weekend that would work for us (for many reasons). In the end, I am glad we did what worked for us. People understood... except, ironically, my SIL who thought it was ridiculous that we were having it on father's day, came to the church and didn't say hello or goodbye and then never showed at the party. Oh well! Now that she has her baby, she will know what you have to do sometimes.
Do what you think it right for your family! Good luck!

You can't wait around for that baby! You have to do what's right for YOUR baby. People will understand. If you want your baby baptized earlier rather than later I would say go with the 2 weeks before route. Good luck!

Re: Need some advice re planning of baptism
Honestly, it depends on YOUR comfort level. I would have had DD baptized at 4 weeks old, but due to LOTS of other family obligations that summer, we had to wait til DD was 3 months old.
I understand the need for shots- but I felt that this was family and as long as everyone washed their hands before handling her, her risk was very minimal.
In fact, I was unable to attend my nephew's baptism because I was in the last 2 weeks of pregnancy and it was held OOS. I would have NEVER expected my brother and SIL to plan it based on my circumstances- and we are extremely close.

Re: Need some advice re planning of baptism
my sil was due 2 months after me, and i wanted to have my dds baptism right away but decided not too, b/c i really wanted her there for my dd. We ended up having her baptism Feb. 10 and everything went great. and i was especially happy b/c my sil was there.

I agree with this. My SIL and I were due 6 weeks apart, and she planned my nieces Baptism just before I was due (she ended up having her baby 6 weeks early, so hence our kids are 3 months apart). Since her baby was early, I wasn't sure I'd make the Baptism because I was so close to the end with mine. I ended up going, and delivering less than a week later!
I know you really want your SIL there, but I would just plan for when you can do it. I didn't plan either of my kids until I was home from the hospital and saw how things were going. There is no age limit, so if you wanted to wait until spring/summer, that's fine too!
Good Luck!

Re: Need some advice re planning of baptism
We had DD baptised when she was almost 8 months old (end of March)...her Godmother lives in TX and was due in December, so she couldn't fly up here before then....and everything worked out well...

Re: Need some advice re planning of baptism
My first thought upon reading this post was dual baptism! - wouldn't that be the cutest thing? of course, you would have to wait to do that until DC is older than you wanted.
But if you really want it to be sooner rather than later, then you will have to do it before her due date.
I would ask her and your mom what they think.

Not a fan of the thought of that. I feel every baby should have their own "day" and I would not want to collaborate with anyone on anything regarding what I would like for my child.
After all these posts, I will do it two weeks before. I just can't put my wishes on hold for something that can't be predicted anyway. It would all be local so if she can come, great. If not, it's up to her. It's just too much to predict, my head is spinning.
Thank you for all of yoru suggestions and thoughts. I like to see all sides of a situation.

Re: Need some advice re planning of baptism
I agree with what the other posters said re: plan it when you want and your SIL will either make it or not. But as far as the actual christening date, I didn't get to choose that. I don't know how your church is but my church doesn't like to do private baptisms so I was locked into their schedule.
