need opinion
we jusit got a dog (dec 31) his name is Rocco and is a mix cocker spaniel and 9 months. I need your opinion regarding what to do with him when we travel in two months. We are going to new York for a 1 1/2 week and we dont know if we should take him or leave him with friends (they have a dog and cat). We are driving there because we have a lot of things to take with us and we are staying with family that are ok if we decide to bring him with us. But I really dont know what to do and what is best for him and for us..

Is he a baby still?? Maybe you can get him used to this and then take him all over with you.. If its too much then never do it again..

Re: need opinion
I've taken my dogs up to ny with me as puppies. It wasn't too bad and with each trip they've adjust very well. My vet recommended that we don't feed them the morning of travel. My car ride is about 4 hours with no traffic, how long is yours?

Re: need opinion
I would bring him so he gets used to it. Just make sure you stop often enough that he can relieve himself and stretch his legs. We started taking Misty on long trips at 10 months old and it has been great since we can travel with her and not have to worry about the expense of boarding or the inconvenience of asking people to take care of her.

Re: need opinion
Agreed, I would take him with. If you do decide to take him, get him in the car as much as possible, even for short trips, before you go. It would help to teach him commands for getting in and out of the car too. We use "up" and "off".
Consider how to safely restrain him also. I know not all people do, but you may want to make sure he can't get in the front seat while you're driving, and try to minimize his injury should you have to stop short, or if (God forbid) you have an accident.
A good way to keep them hydrated if they don't want to drink is giving them ice cubes too. If you have a cooler available.
If you'll be staying in motels/hotels on your trip, make sure they are dog-friendly first.
