Need help ASAP!

We ended up rescuing a sweet Husky this weekend. Not the one I initially wanted, but another one. Anyway, she's so sweet and my dog and her are getting along pretty well, she's great with the kids. But there is one BIG problem. She won't stop peeing in the house. Chat Icon When I decided to rescue one she needed to be housebroken already. They told me they were pretty sure she was. Well, she's not. I'm very upset because I really need her to be housebroken. We're trying to put the house on the market and now she's peeing everywhere. I've been cleaning it great, but still. What am I going to do? I haven't housebroken a pet in years. I might also be getting a job that would possible start 8/1/08. How can I do all of this? She's wonderful otherwise. HELP!!! Thanks!

Oh, and now the other rescue called and said the one I orginally wanted is available again.

Re: Need help ASAP!

I posted about this a couple of times, but I used Poochie Bells and Brody was house trained within a few weeks. You can google them. You hang them on the door, and take the dog out every hou or so and ring the bells first. Before u know it the dog will ring the bells to go out. Brody picked it up right away and still uses them. We have them on our front door and on our back sliders.

Re: Need help ASAP!

I know it's probably not what you wanted to hear, but maybe there's just too much on your plate right now and adopting a dog isn't the best thing if you are trying to sell your home and starting a new job? Would you consider placing her back with the rescuers? I would hate for it to become a situation where you feel more frustration for the dog than love, which can happen if you really don't have the time to train a dog that you were told would not need training. As you know, to properly train/housebreak a dog takes a lot of work and you don't seem to be able to be up to that challenge at the present time. And you seem to have been misled by the rescue co regarding this so it's not your fault re that. I think rescuers would much rather take a dog back than have the dog be in a home that might not be the best thing for him/her. It's a shame they lied to you!

So I don't mean this in a bad way! I mean it to help b/c as an outsider looking in, it sounds like now maybe isn't the best time to add new responsibilties to the mix of all you have going on, which will just stress you out. It's up to you if you want this dog badly enough to commit (and have the patience) for proper house training. Chat Icon

Re: Need help ASAP!

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. We've put a lot of thought into this, and as much as we hate to do this, we're going to return her to the rescue that we got her from. I contacted them this morning and said they can take her back. I know they'll be able to find her another home. I just feel bad, but yes I was mislead. We didn't get a puppy for that reason. We just don't have the time to housebreak. Accidents are ok, but not full blown housebreaking. The timing is not right for that. If we come across another husky that is housebroken for sure, that's a different story. We definitely want to rescue one so we'll keep looking. Thanks everyone! Chat Icon

Did you check with the vet to make sure that the dog did not have an infection of any sort. Chat Icon

Re: Need help ASAP!

Thats sad that you are going to bring her back.

You have to remember she is a new place. Shes nervous. She needs to get use to it. She needs a few days of work to learn to go outside. It took Rudy no longer then 3 days to not have an accident. I urge to work with her!

I agree. It seems to me that you wound up biting off more than you could chew.

I understand you're very interested in rescuing a dog, but it sounds to me like you don't really have the time to invest in a dog right now.

You need to remember rescued dogs were displaced to begin with. These are dogs who have been bounced from homes and need stability. I'd hate to see a situation like this one come up again and you need to return that one too.

Maybe when things settle down for you, you could then consider getting another dog. But for now, IMO, it's just not the right time for you or the dog.

I do agree. All pets need consistency and rescue dogs esp need owners who are ready for a major life change when that new dog enters the home.

It does sound like there is a lot on your plate, and maybe once you move and get settled in your new home, as well as get settled in your new job things will work out best for your family and any dog that you choose to adopt. Chat Icon

I do agree it's sad if the dog has to go back! But I personally think it's sadder if the dog is kept at a time when it needs consistency and patience when the family clearly has a lot of major life changes going on.

I think it's important for the OP to realize that any dog (whether trained or not) will take work and effort and may revert back to needing to be housebroken again when entering a new home, due to reasons June mentioned. I would surely hope the rescuers discussed all of this and really evaluated if now is the right time to adopt a dog into a home undergoing transition, whose owners may not have the time to dedicate should the dog need unexpected training.

Re: Need help ASAP!

Thanks again everyone.

Before we went into this we did put a lot of thought into this, but we didn't think she would be this bad. I mean I take her out all the time and she'll still pee right in front of us and then pee in the house right after we took her out regardless of how long we had her out. We feel horrible about this. For a dog that was suppose to be housebroken, we expected accidents, but not this. The rescue place said she was a stray and now that she looked housebroken. Big difference. But, where we got her from is someone who rescues tons of animals. Also, the daughter is 16 was going to keep her until her mom said I was coming to see her. I do know she'll have a loving home and someone already cares a lot about her. We know it's the best decision for her. My dog is also being a little cranky with her, which is to be expected. We do have a lot going on, but I still think we didn't make a mistake by trying to give her a home. I honestly don't think she was housebroken at all. I know she'll be loved where we got her and it's not the pound. So she'll be safe and happy. It helps knowing that. I do still feel guilty though. I understand everyone's mixed feelings with all of this, and we did put a lot of thought into this, but yes it's more than I thought. Thanks ladies! Chat Icon
