Hi -
I really don't feel as though the bug problem is bad here! We have water bugs, which are gross, but I've only ever found 2 in our apartment. I've never seen a snake and none of my friends have either.
Mosquitos and bees, I would say is comprable to LI. I wear by bug spray and they don't bother me!

Honestly the one and only thing I hate about N.C. are the bugs. I haven't seen a snake yet. I know they are out there, but thank god I haven't seen one. The problem with the bugs are they are twice the size as normal ones. We have crickets which always seem to jump there way into the house. And today I finally found the spider that my dh saw on my pillow about 3 weeks ago. It was HUGE! The most annoying thing we have down here are what we call "sugar ants." They are these little tiny ants that come in looking for food. They seemed to have found a cookie my ds left on his snack table last night. Everyone I know down here has them once in a while. They just come in look for what they want and leave. It is really gross. We don't have an infestation or anything, but my only piece of advice is keep a can of bug spray in your house. And have a bottle of off handy at all times. The mosquitos are horrible in the summer. Not any worse than up North, but they bite the second you exit the door. Believe me, though, it is well worth the move. I HATE bugs, but I am perfectly happy down here. I just know exactly where my killing spray is!

I keep bug spray at home in NY and use it pretty frequently. I have discovered that ant spray by Raid kills everything, not just ants
something we have a LOT of in our apt.... silverfish! YUCK! and they're always rearing their ugly selves. even in the dead of winter!

I used to live there for several years.
Snakes: mostly in the country (outside big city limit). The black are very common. I hated seeing snake skin outside barns in the backyard. You really don't see the snakes themselves but you have to be careful.
Bugs: they don't bit you they "impale" you. I could never go out in the yard after 5pm in the summer or I would have 10 bits in 30 seconds. I would have to use OFF all the time. I hated BBQs.

In the area where our new house is, the neighbors said they have seen a couple of copperheads! (we have 2.5 acres and so do the neighbors)

I havent noticed a difference with bugs.
I've seen black a two snakes in 1.5 years, one of which was on a nature trail.
The blue tailed skinks (small lizards) really scared me at first.

and the SNAKE that was on my front step!! This freaked me out! ...good thing I have my doggies
we live in a new community and there is common land new to our house and next to the common land is a big farm...so I know there are animals around...this was a baby snake...as long as I don't see a big one i'll be ok...

I haven't had a snake scene or crazy bug incident(I can tolerate a lot though, I lived in FL for years)...but what gets me is the raccoons around here. They are really big!
I see little bunnies hopping around all over the place too.
