Nassau county...suggest your town!
Hello everyone! I just joined LIF today, I am a proud mommy of a 8.5 month old DS. We currently live in Bayside, Queens in a co-op, but are looking to buy a house in the next year so we can expand our family. We really love Queens, all of our family and friends are in Bayside and Whitestone. But if we were to buy here, we would choose to go the Catholic school route, and while I am fine with that, DH is a big believer in a public education. So he wants to move to an area with great public schools. I am in nassau all the time for shopping, swim lessons for DS, etc. But I know nothing about school districts and kid friendly neighborhoods. Can someone recommend a town that has good LIRR access to penn (DH works in the city), great public schools, lots of young families, activities for kids, maybe a YMCA nearby, etc. We are looking for a 3-4 bedroom house and our range is 500-750. Thank you so much!!

Rockville Centre sounds like a good fit...good commute to Penn, excellent public schools, great community feel and lots of kid activities. You shouldn't have trouble finding a house in that price range.

Re: Nassau county...suggest your town!
You should also look into Merrick, Bellmore, and Wantagh. I am a realtor and do most of my work in those towns, but I live in N. Bellmore, too.
It's a great commute to the city from any of those towns -- tons of express trains to Penn (I used to do the commute myself when I worked in the city). Merrick is the furthest west - it's 39 minutes to Penn on the express train,a nd the trains run often. Also, all the major highways are nearby or easily accessible.
All 3 have highly rated school systems.
There are great activities for kids in the area. I have a 3 y.o. and he loves all of the local libraries, there are lots of sports activities (he plays soccer already), and you are nearby tons of parks and beaches. Bellmore Village, for example, has movie theaters, restaurants, candy stores... we take our son to the children's theater there often. There are often local festivals -- the fall festival, the strawberry festival in June, a Halloween parade with trick or treating at local merchants for the kids, etc.
Your budget could buy you a great home in those areas, including new construction, if that interests you.
Feel free to contact me if you want more information about areas of Long Island that may be of interest, or the house buying process in general. You can reach me by FM, or email - [email protected], or by cell (516)587-7618.

RVC sounds just what you want... and it is super close, i think 40 min LIRR ride

DH and his family are from here and it's a great town.
The train also runs express to and from Penn.
We bought during the housing boom so this town was out of our price range then, but it's our goal to move there or one of the adjacent towns (Massapequa, Bellmore, Wantagh) at some point.
You are also super close to everything (beach, parkways, restaurants, shopping, malls).

Seaford is a great town, but their school budget has a history of failing.

ehhh, not too frequently. i went through Seaford SD and the only year it didnt pass when I was there was when I was in Kindergarden (1989). I graduated in 2002 and not one other year did it fail (or at least not pass on 2nd attempt).
They had some issues this past year but I think that is it in recent history.

It failed in 2006 and 2011 . Seaford is a great town, but their school budget has a history of failing.

It failed in 2006 and 2011. And there are currently no middle school sports, as it was cut out by the budget.
A contingency budget has long-lasting effects, not just one school year.

Re: Nassau county...suggest your town!
We're also house hunting on LI (moving from Queens) and have similar criteria, I commute to the city every day EARLY and we need a good commute. We are looking in Hewlett, Woodmere, East Rockaway (in the Lynbrook SD) and Lynbrook. Hewlett-Woodmere and Lynbrook SDs, from what I understand, are both highly sought after and well-respected.
Good luck!

RVC meets your criteria as does Garden City.

Re: Nassau county...suggest your town!
To the OP poster -- All of the areas mentioned are great areas. But I think it also depends on how large and updated you want your house to be.
You can definitely buy a home in RVC and Garden City within the $500K to $750K range, but it will be a smaller home that needs some updating, for the most part. That same budget will buy you a larger, more updated home on a larger property in the Merrick to Massapequa area.
I know Garden City well - my husband grew up there and his family still lives there. It's a fabulous area, but many of the homes in your price range (assuming you want GC schools) are capes or smaller (3 bed, 1.5 bath) colonials and splits with kitchens and baths that are in need of updating. And I had a customer who very recently was looking in RVC and Merrick and Bellmore, but wanted a large updated kitchen, central air, preferably 4 bedrooms, and a large yard. There were only a few homes in RVC that fit the bill, and many in Merrick and Bellmore.
So I would think about whether you are willing to do some cosmetic updating, and whether you could be happy in a smaller home (e.g., a 3 bed, 1.5 bath home). It definitely helps to look in the different areas and figure out how far your dollar will go in those areas before you start focusing your search.
Good luck!

Your taxes are still raised on a contingency budget, and you lose so much - sports, clubs, electives, AP classes, enrichment programs, field trips, small class size, etc

Re: Nassau county...suggest your town!
Thanks again everyone!!
Thanks to the PP who brought up the point of our price range not buying a updated, large home in Garden City and Rockville Centre. We really want a 4 bedroom home if possible since we want 2 more kids. Also, we would prefer to not have to update/fix the house.
We found houses on MLSLI that we liked in Wantagh (mandalay section) East Meadow Merrick (Merrick Woods section) Massapequa (Massapequa Shores)
