Nap Question for moms of 8-9 month olds
DS has never been a great napper as a newborn. He was always a big catnapper. All of a sudden he got on this great schedule, but recently things have taken a turn for the worse. He started STTN 12 hours the last 2 weeks after all 4 of his top teeth cut and his gums were no longer swollen. So he wakes around 7am. First nap is usually 10 am... he usually naps 1.5-2 hours. His second nap is usually 3 hours later and a catnap. He always wakes up crying after this nap. The last couple of days hes REALLY been fighting this second nap. Question is... Because he is STTN is one nap now enough for him and he doesn't need the second nap?? Or am I putting him to nap to early and maybe he can stay up an extra half hour or hour??

Re: Nap Question for moms of 8-9 month olds
My DS is 8 months old and has never been a great napper either. He also STTN (7:30-6) but still usually needs 3 naps throughout the day. His naps are anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. Every day is different. Only a handful of times has he gone all day with only 2 naps... he usually needs that third one or he is a cranky mess. We've noticed that his threshold is about 3 hours... he shows signs of being tired (eye rubbing, yawning, whining) just about 3 hours after he wakes up from his previous nap. So we try to get him down on that "loose" schedule.

Thanks. I thought 3 hours is usually max for him as well. Hes getting another tooth so maybe this is throwing everything off?

Re: Nap Question for moms of 8-9 month olds
Could def be it... whenever DS has a bad teething day he seems to be off in pretty much every way! Like yesterday for example... he fell asleep on DH for his mid-afternoon nap but about 30 mins later he suddenly shot up and started screaming his head off! So upset! He NEVER does that. Then within 2 minutes he was out like a light again. Those darn teeth mess with everything!!!

Re: Nap Question for moms of 8-9 month olds
9 months is too young for 1 nap only. I definitely think if he's crying it's that he is still tired. I would actually put him down for nap #2 earlier. He may be overtired and that's why he's not sleeping longer. Try putting him down 30 minutes earlier and see what happens.
ETA: At 9 months my DS was just transitioning from 3 down to 2 naps.

My DD (10 months) also has the same morning schedule for you. A trick I read about that works is to not go in for 15 minutes...if they are awake, let them play. if they are whining, let them whine. See if they go back to sleep. I tried this for the first time a few months back and what do you know, DD went back to sleep. IF she wakes up crying, I know to let her and 99% of the time, she will turn over and go back to sleep. If she wakes up quiet and playing, then i know shes had a good nap.
If hes fighting the nap, could it be he is extending his wakeful times? When DD fought her naps, she wasnt tired enough to sleep. If I let her stay up a little while longer, she passed right out.

DS STTN approx 10hrs. He naps at 9am & 2pm. At 8mo he still definitely needs that second nap.
How is you son without the nap? I would try pushing it back a little bit... Follow his cues and just put him down when he seems tired.
