Name Poll...for those with an open mind
I really want an eccentric name for my child whether it be a boy or girl. Here are the names DH and I are leaning towards:
Girl: Sayuri Boy: Milan
What do u ladies think? Like it or hate it?

Re: Name Poll...for those with an open mind
I think the girl name would prove hard for others to pronounce and set her up for a lifetime of explaining her name and how to say it.

Re: Name Poll...for those with an open mind
I love the girl name...not too crazy about the boy. My name is Chastity and I love it even though I did have people misspell it, mispronounce and found ways to make fun it when I was younger.

Re: Name Poll...for those with an open mind
Its funny, I wanted Megumi as a middle name for a girl, but alas, I had a boy with a conventional middle name.
I love Japanese names, I think one thing is that some names are really really cute for a little kid, but youv'e got to think about how they will deal with it when they are older. My friend named her little girl Tallulah and I just can't imagine her being Dr Tallulah Jones MD...or President Tallulah Jones...but I like the girls name, don't like the boys name...to Beckham-ish!

I like the girl name-it is definitley different. But I do agree it may be setting her up for mispronounciations.

I think the girl name is beautiful - and I dont see how its difficult to pronounce.
I think Milan is fine - though it reminds me of the guy on Project Runway - is Milan a special place for you and your DH?

My nephew is named Milan. He lives in Montreal and its not a common name there at all. The family thought it was odd at first but now it is just normal!

Re: Name Poll...for those with an open mind
I love them both . . .
the girl's name is very different, but sooo pretty and I don't think it would be so difficult to spell or pronounce. I had to correct people my whole life with my name (both first and last) but as an adult I really appreciate my names.
and I think Milan will be a popular boy's name soon -- its so handsome. And Milan Kundera is one of my favorite authors!

I don't know...I like different names, but I grew up with the name Alicia and I cannot tell you how often it is totally pronounced wrong and it isn't even that hard to say....I would say 9 out of 10 times people completely annihilate my name, so you would spend A LOT of time correcting people with the girl's name you like.

No not a special place at all. I just found it while searching baby names and thought it was nice.

I love the name Sayuri, but it reminds me of the geisha
speaking of which... there is a girl who works on my floor whose name is Geisha. That's right, her mama though it would be perfectly fine for her daughter to go through life with a name traditionally used to describe japanese prostitutes.

I only ask cause DH and I were trying to think of names that had special meaning for us - we love shelter island and researched the history of it, thinking maybe we'd find a name that we liked - turns out the person who founded it was named Sylvester, so that's out.
I totally understand your desire for your child to have a different name and I really like both of your choices. . . but the most important people are you and DH - if you guys like it - go for it!

I really like the name Milan for a boy...sounds soooo European
Sayuri is also a very pretty and delicate name and even though your daughter will be explaining her name and its pronounciation for the rest of her life, if thats what you like, then go for it!
We dont always have to name our child common names....
I love them both.
