Nail Salon....

I was getting a manicure today at a nail salon that I have never been to and it smelt so bad. The salon I normally go to doesn't smell strongly of fumes, but this one did. I almost couldn't breathe. I wanted to leave but she started my nails so I just sat there.

I was only there 15-20 mins, so I really don't think I could have done that much damage by breathing it in. DH is upset and seems to think that it was really bad for the babies. I am almost 26 weeks....does anyone think that it was really bad even though it was just one time? Chat Icon

Re: Nail Salon....

if you worked there then that would be bad.. but one time I think your okay. We come in contact with so many things being prego.. as long as its not a frequent occurance the baby will be fine.

Re: Nail Salon....

breathing it in for 15-20 min won't do much harm....

conversely, I personally am avoiding any manis/pedis not becuase of the fumes... but becuase of the chemicals that get absorbed by the skin (toluene, acetone, ethyl acetate....) all nasty stuff in polish and remover.

My theory is that if I have to wear nitrile gloves and work in the fume hood while handling a chemical in the lab, I won't expose myself to it even in small quantities outside of the lab when I am not similarly protected.....

I should add that I am being overly cautious and almost no one shares my perspective.... I just put all of the beauty regiments (polish, hair dye, highlights) in the same category of 'well, they never proved it's unsafe, but they also never PROVED it's safe')

Re: Nail Salon....

I think you're ok. I got my nails done my whole first pregnancy and I had acrylic tips. Nothing ever happened to my son.

Just so you know, I share your mindset on this. I even bought Burts Bees shampoo to be safer.

To the OP, I don't think one time can really be harmful overall.

My OB also shares this mindset. I'm on pg #2 now and I laugh at how deprived I felt not dyeing my hair... little did I know it was the first of hundreds of sacrifices needed to be a mom Chat Icon

I am on the same page too. I have gotten nail polishes and removers that are plant based. I do go to the salon for them to shape my nails and cut my cuticles, but I bring my own stuff. I also go when I know they are slow.

The smell on a small scale is probably fine.Chat Icon

Re: Nail Salon....

When I was pregnant w/Hayley I still had my acrylic nails on and got them done every 2 weeks. I didn't go to a big nail salon, it was my friend's house, so it wasn't like 30 ladies were getting their nails done on a daily basis.

Don't worry, you are fine Chat Icon
