head tilting to one side.....

Matthew favors turning his head to one side and when you hold him he does this.
I try to straighten it when feeding him and he pushes to tilt it to the side...it worries me that it will be a problem later.
I noticed when he sleeps his head turns and I reposition it....Im so worriedChat Icon

Re: head tilting to one side.....

Same with Jackie! It started in the Papasan - her neck would be totally crooked and we would put burp cloths or whatever we could find - now we're obsessed about straightening it any chance we get. Her face was even a little flatter on one side - it just started to correct itself we think b/c we won't for one second let her sit with her head tilted. As for sleeping she's doing better but its hard to watch her through the night. We talked to the pediatrician about it and he said that's all we can do - is to keep trying to straightening her out. Diane, you have twins, right? My friend has twin girls and one or both of the girls had a tilted head, which was caused by their position in the womb. The nurse referred to it as "Funny Head Syndrome" (IMO, not the nicest name). She was able to get them physical therapy to strengthen their neck muscles and it has since corrected. Her girls are now 7 months.

yes, that is what my PED said...mainly for his flat head. She told me to reposition his head when he sleeps, and hopefully it will correct nitself, or else he would need a head brace.....but that was not for his tilted head.....

Re: head tilting to one side.....

Sounds like torticollis(sp?) ask your ped if you should have him evaluated for PT. Early intervention does this for free and they will come to your house and work with Matthew to strngthen his neck

Re: head tilting to one side.....

I do not post on here often but both my children had torticollis and it comes from their position in the womb. Their neck muscles were weak on one side and they always titled their heads to one side and favored one side. They both received physical therapy for about 6 months and they are healthy 8yrs old and 5 yrs old. The earlier you start the therapy the better my daughter was 10 months when she started and hers took longer to correct but my son was 5 months and his corrected quicker. Good luck and do not worry it is more commom than you think and easily corrected. Call early intervention from Either Suffolk or Nassau County depending upon where you live and have him evaluated and they give him the services for free if he qualifies. If not private insurance covered mine I only paid the copays.

Re: head tilting to one side.....

My son has torticollis. His pediatrician noticed it at around 3 or 4 months old. He referred us to a neurosurgeon, who recommended physical therapy. He did not qualify for Early Intervention. He has been getting PT since October, and is getting better. Definitely ask your pediatrician about it!

Re: head tilting to one side.....

Ella had a slight case - she favored one side. Our ped recommended turning/stretching her neck the other way after she comes out of the bath. We also moved her toys to the other side (in her bouncey seat) to encourage her to look the other way.

Almost as soon as we started becoming concerned, it went away.

Re: head tilting to one side.....

This happened to my DD and my neice. My sister, who is a pediatric physical therapist says that most babies favor one side. She encouraged me to position her and play with her so that she looks to the other side. SHe is 8 months now, and although there is a slight favor to one side- she can easily tilt, turn and move her head to both sides.
